DAVID DAVIES SENTENCED FOR CHILD INDECENCY IN CEFN COED, MERTHYR TYDFIL

In July 2008, David Davies, a 60-year-old resident of Cefn Coed in Merthyr Tydfil, was sentenced to five years in prison after being convicted of serious child indecency offenses. The court heard that Davies had engaged in indecent acts with a young girl during the 1990s, acts which he had vehemently denied throughout the trial.

Despite his denials, the victim provided compelling testimony to the jury, recounting how she was taken to a secluded wooded area where she saw Davies open the belt on his trousers. Her detailed account played a crucial role in securing his conviction. The case highlighted a disturbing pattern of predatory behavior, as Davies had previously served time for a severe assault on a young girl in 1986. Additionally, records indicated that he had been in court before for having unlawful but consensual sexual relations with an underage female.

Judge Christopher Llewellyn-Jones QC addressed the court, emphasizing that Davies’s criminal history demonstrated a troubling pattern of misconduct during that period. Although he has not committed any sexual offenses since, the judge noted the profound impact such crimes have on victims. He referenced the victim’s own words, revealing that she had contemplated suicide at the time due to the trauma inflicted upon her.

During the sentencing, Davies appeared in court with his wife, who was reported to have health issues. As he was led away to begin his sentence, Davies turned to those present at the back of the courtroom. Showing a defiant gesture, he waved and gave a “thumbs-up” sign, which was met with waves from the spectators.

Following his release from prison, Davies will be required to register as a sex offender for the rest of his life, a measure that underscores the severity of his crimes and the ongoing risk he poses to the community.
