DAVID COOKSON AND HIS SHOCKING CRIMES IN MERSEYLABROOK AND WIRRAL
A mother from the Wirral region has bravely shared the devastating impact of her teenage daughter's ordeal at the hands of David Cookson, a man from Merseyside who was recently convicted of multiple heinous crimes. The mother, who has chosen to remain anonymous due to legal restrictions, recounted the heartbreaking moment she was informed of her young daughter's sexual assault.
She described feeling as though her chest was struck by an overwhelming blow, an experience that appeared almost surreal in its emotional intensity.
Cookson, aged 48 and residing on Liscard Road in Wallasey, was sentenced to a 12-year prison term at Liverpool Crown Court on June 26.
His guilty plea encompassed five separate counts of rape and eleven charges related to the possession and distribution of indecent photographs, which included a total of 170 images and videos depicting the abuse.
Court proceedings also revealed that Cookson had recorded himself engaging in sexual activity with the girl, who was only 12 years old at the time of the offenses.
This revelation further compounded the severity of his crimes.
The crimes first came to light in March when the young girl disclosed the abuse during a conversation with a staff member at her school.
Her mother expressed ongoing disbelief and anguish, recalling how social workers appeared at her doorstep to deliver the devastating news.
She described the feeling as if a fist had been driven directly through her chest, tearing her heart asunder.
Her immediate reaction was shock and confusion, as she struggled to understand how someone could commit such acts against a vulnerable young girl.
She emphasized her emotional pain, asserting, “I know I am not the victim, but as her mother, I feel her pain and anger.” In police interviews, David Cookson admitted to engaging in sexual intercourse with the girl on eight separate occasions.
Though he has prior convictions, they were not related to sexual offenses.
During the legal proceedings, Cookson’s defense attorney, Paul Wood, acknowledged that his client recognized the wrongfulness of his actions and expressed that he takes responsibility for his misconduct.
The defense also highlighted that Cookson exhibited a degree of empathy towards his victim.
The mother voiced fears about her daughter’s future, expressing concern about the long-term psychological effects of the traumatic experiences.
She worries about her daughter's ability to trust others and to develop healthy relationships in the future.
The family continues to live in a state of distress, with nightly fears and the lingering shadow of this nightmare.
Both she and her daughter remain haunted by the memories, with the mother noting, “She won’t sleep with the bedroom light off, and neither will I.
It’s like we’re still living this horrible nightmare.” In a heartfelt effort to aid others in similar situations, the mother is considering establishing a support group for parents of sexually abused children.
She explained that there is currently a lack of dedicated spaces for parents to share their experiences and seek advice from others who understand their pain.
Despite her own difficulties, she expressed pride in her daughter’s courage—her daughter's bravery in coming forward has, according to her, potentially prevented other children from suffering similar abuses.
Outside the court, some relatives and members of the community expressed their disappointment with the length of Cookson’s sentence, describing it as “totally inadequate” given the severity of the offenses.
The case continues to serve as a stark reminder of the importance of vigilance and support for victims of such heinous crimes across Merseyside and beyond.
