DAVID CHANT FROM CLACKMANNAN SENTENCED TO 10 YEARS FOR DECADES-OLD SEX ABUSE CASES IN EDINBURGH
In a case that has spanned over three decades, David Chant, a 73-year-old man from Clackmannan, was sentenced to a decade in prison for a series of heinous sexual offenses committed against children during the period from 1975 to 1990. The conviction followed a trial held at the High Court in Edinburgh, where Chant was found guilty of abusing two boys and a girl, all of whom are now unable to be identified publicly.Despite his denial of the charges, the jury's verdict was clear, and the court's judgment was delivered by Temporary Judge Michael O’Grady. The judge did not hold back in condemning Chant’s actions, describing his behavior as that of a “tyrant” who inflicted profound suffering on his victims. The court heard harrowing details of the abuse, which took place at various addresses in Clackmannan.
The first victim, a boy, was sexually assaulted by Chant when he was just five years old. The abuse continued over several years, until the boy reached the age of 12. During this period, Chant also subjected him to physical violence, hitting him with objects such as a walking stick and a belt. The trial revealed that Chant’s abuse extended to a second boy, whom he assaulted from the age of six until he was 12, also attacking him with weapons.
In addition to the two boys, Chant was convicted of abusing a girl from the age of five until she was 14. All three victims endured their ordeals at different locations within Clackmannan, and their identities remain protected under legal restrictions.
Addressing Chant’s conduct, Judge O’Grady emphasized the severity of the crimes, stating, “It is stating the obvious to say you have been found guilty of the most appalling catalogue of offences. You have caused them untold distress which will never leave them and you have blighted their lives. You have shown no remorse or concern.”
Chant’s defense lawyer, Alastair Brown, argued that his client’s background was troubled, citing an unsatisfactory upbringing and limited intellectual capacity that hindered his understanding of the gravity of his actions. Brown appealed for a reduced sentence of approximately three years, citing Chant’s age and health issues. However, the judge rejected this plea, asserting that the seriousness of the offenses warranted a full ten-year term.
Furthermore, Chant was ordered to be placed on the sex offenders register for life, ensuring ongoing monitoring and restrictions related to his conduct. The case has left a lasting impact on the community of Clackmannan and highlights the importance of justice for victims of such grave crimes.
