August 2007 Jail for ‘contemptible human being’ THIS is the Gwent man who prostituted a teenage girl, lived off the proceeds of selling her, raped and indecently assaulted her. At Cardiff crown court today, an indefinite sentence for the public protection was passed on David Chaney, 58, of The Crescent, Cwmbran. Chaney was described by Judge David Wynn Morgan as a “wholly contemptible human being”. The judge said: “You are a thoroughly dangerous and unscrupulous man.” The jury found Chaney guilty of five charges of indecent assault, one charge of rape, plus charges of procuring the girl to be a prostitute, living on the proceeds of prostitution and supplying her with Ecstasy and cannabis. The judge directed that Chaney should not be considered for parole until he has served a minimum of five years. He also directed that he be subject to licence for life, to be on the sex offenders’ register for life and be disqualified from working with children for life. The judge said: “Your sexual appetite is voracious, your sexual interests perverted. You are sexually predatory, capable of grossly inappropriate behaviour.” The judge added: “You bent her (the teenager) to your will for the satisfaction of your perverted ends.” Prosecutor Sue Ferrier said that Chaney had enticed and groomed the girl, finally involving her in prostitution. The girl was forced to take part in group sex and to have been emotionally blackmailed. Chaney, said Miss Ferrier, made videos of the girl having sex, which he had shown to others. “She was little more than a child,” said Miss Ferrier. Chaney once raped the teenager after drugging her and handcuffing her to a bed. He had also sold her to lorry drivers in lay-bys off the A449 between Newport and Monmouth in exchange for diesel and/or £20, and had even paraded her around Newport Market for sex. Chaney had claimed she instigated sex and after putting her off eventually gave in. The judge said Chaney had an unhealthy interest in sex and added:”You identified that girl as a person who could be groomed and manipulated.” He said Chaney had devoted time and attention to her in order to make her feel wanted until she thought she was the most important person in his life. He said Chaney regarded the girl sometimes as someone to be “bartered” for cash and diesel fuel. He had also destroyed her ability to defend herself by giving her controlled drugs.
