DAVID CHANEY FROM CWMBRAN SENTENCED FOR HORRIFIC CRIMES INVOLVING TEENAGE GIRL IN CARDIFF

In August 2007, a disturbing case unfolded at Cardiff Crown Court involving David Chaney, a 58-year-old resident of The Crescent in Cwmbran. The court heard harrowing details of his heinous crimes against a teenage girl, which included sexual assault, exploitation, and other grave offenses. The judge, David Wynn Morgan, did not hold back in condemning Chaney, describing him as a "wholly contemptible human being" and emphasizing the danger he posed to society.

Chaney was found guilty of multiple serious charges, including five counts of indecent assault, one count of rape, and additional charges related to procuring the girl to work as a prostitute. The prosecution also presented evidence that Chaney had lived off the earnings from her prostitution, supplied her with illegal drugs such as Ecstasy and cannabis, and engaged in acts of sexual violence against her. The court heard that he had manipulated and groomed the girl over a period of time, ultimately forcing her into a life of exploitation.

The judge ordered that Chaney serve a minimum of five years before being eligible for parole. Furthermore, he was sentenced to an indefinite period under the Public Protection Sentences scheme, with lifelong registration on the sex offenders' register and a lifetime ban from working with children. Ferrier revealed that Chaney had recorded videos of her engaging in sexual acts, which he later showed to others, further humiliating and exploiting her.

The court was told that Chaney had once drugged the girl, handcuffed her to a bed, and raped her. He also sold her to lorry drivers in lay-bys off the A449 between Newport and Monmouth in exchange for diesel or twenty pounds, and even paraded her around Newport Market for sex. Despite his claims that she initiated the sexual encounters and that he eventually relented, the evidence painted a picture of a man with a disturbing and unhealthy obsession with sex.

Judge Morgan highlighted Chaney’s perverted interests and his capacity for grossly inappropriate behavior. He pointed out that Chaney had identified the girl as someone who could be manipulated and groomed, dedicating considerable time and attention to make her feel wanted—only to use her as a commodity for cash and fuel. The judge also noted that Chaney had destroyed her ability to defend herself by administering controlled drugs, further emphasizing the malicious nature of his actions.
