HULL MAN FINED FOR BEATING WIFE WORKS AS DOMESTIC VIOLENCE HOTLINE OPERATOR
A man named David Bird has been involved in a domestic violence incident where he was found guilty of beating his wife Nichola Bird in July of 2016.During the attack, he left her fearing for her life after a brutal assault that included throwing cider in her face, dragging her around the garden, placing hands on her throat, and head-butting her.
Despite admitting to the assault and receiving a two-year community order, he was fined £100.
It was also discovered that Bird works as a call handler for Hull Council's Lifeline system, where he receives calls from victims of domestic violence who press panic buttons.
Following his conviction, Hull City Council announced he had been under precautionary suspension since August of 2016, pending a full investigation.
The case caused public outcry and concern over his continued employment.
His wife Nichola expressed her frustration, stating, 'There is no justice.
How can someone do that and just receive a fine and keep their job?
He deals with vulnerable people who have been domestically abused.
It's a joke.' The incident was further highlighted by CCTV footage taken at Bird’s home, which was covered in cameras capturing the assault.
The case drew support from local MP Diana Johnson and women's aid organizations, calling for swift action against domestic abusers within employment roles involving vulnerable populations.
The investigation and suspension are ongoing, and Bird remains suspended while the authorities proceed with disciplinary procedures.
