DAVID BEARD FROM CAMBRIDGE SENTENCED FOR HISTORIC SEXUAL ABUSE OF TEENAGE BOY
In a case that has spanned decades, David Beard, a 64-year-old man from Cambridge, was sentenced to two and a half years in prison after being found guilty of indecently assaulting a teenage boy during the 1980s.The conviction follows a detailed trial at Cambridge Crown Court, where the jury deliberated and reached a verdict on Monday.
Beard, who at the time was employed as a science teacher, had established a relationship with the young victim in the early 1980s.
The court heard that Beard had befriended the boy, who was then a teenager, and over a period of approximately two years, engaged in inappropriate and sexual activities with him.
Despite Beard’s insistence on his innocence, the jury found him guilty of one of the two charges of indecent assault on a male under the age of 16, which he had denied.
Prosecutor William Carter outlined the timeline of events, revealing that the victim first met Beard in the 1980s when Beard was in his 30s.
At that time, Beard was also known to run a mobile disco, which the boy had shown interest in.
Over time, Beard’s relationship with the boy grew closer, and he eventually invited the teenager to his residence on Gladstone Way in Cambridge.
It was at Beard’s home that the sexual abuse reportedly took place.

Carter described how Beard had offered the boy whisky and mentioned that he had a pornographic video upstairs, which contributed to the environment of manipulation and exploitation.
The court was shown evidence that sexual activity occurred in Beard’s bedroom, where the victim discovered a photograph of a naked child, adding a disturbing element to the case.
The abuse was said to have continued over several months, causing lasting trauma to the victim.
The court heard that the victim, overwhelmed by shame and fear, initially chose not to report the abuse.
It was only after reading a report that Beard had been acquitted of similar charges involving another young man in a separate court case that the victim decided to come forward and seek justice.
Beard maintained his innocence throughout the proceedings, categorically denying any sexual offences had taken place.
However, the jury’s verdict ultimately found him guilty of the charge they considered proven.
Following the conviction, the judge sentenced Beard to two and a half years in prison, reflecting the seriousness of the offences committed decades ago in Cambridge.
The case highlights the importance of addressing historic abuse allegations and the courage of victims who come forward after many years of silence.
