--------------------------- 2022-03-11 05:00: A 20-year-old man, Dave Hirchfield, arranged to meet an underage girl for sex after grooming her through months of online communication, a court heard.
Hirchfield traveled from Sheffield to her hometown in County Durham on Wednesday, February 9, for the meeting.
Durham Crown Court was told that several months prior, the girl’s mother discovered her daughter was exchanging messages online with a man named Dave Hirchfield.
Prosecutor Elizabeth Muir stated that although the conversations had not been sexual and there was no mention of a meeting at that time, the girl blocked Hirchfield on her phone but did not take any further action.
On February 9, the girl told her mother she was going to a nearby shopping center.
Later, her mother attempted to call her, but her daughter's phone was switched off.
A second phone, which her mother was unaware of, was found in her bedroom.
This device contained more sexualized messages with Hirchfield, discussing plans to meet.
Following this, police were contacted, and the girl was classified as a high-risk missing person.
By 7:35 pm, she was seen at the roadside; when spoken to, she appeared anxious.
She told police she had fallen while running and had walked into a lamppost, explaining bruises on her knee and marks on her coat.
The girl was taken to a police station, where her mother was waiting.
Hirchfield was located nearby and initially claimed to be Bob from Dublin, asking for directions to a bus station.
When challenged about his true identity, he was arrested.
Police interviewed the girl that evening and the following day; she refused to give a statement.
However, messaging evidence indicated that sexual contact was being planned.
It was also revealed that Hirchfield wanted her to return to Sheffield to stay overnight, but she declined, citing concerns her mother would become suspicious and mentioning a hospital appointment the next day.
During the meeting, Miss Muir said Hirchfield had kissed and sexually touched the girl, and he performed a sexual act on himself in her presence.
In a message, he asked if she would wait for four years until he was released from prison.
Hirchfield, of St Elizabeth Close, Sheffield, pleaded guilty to engaging in sexual communication with a child, meeting a child following grooming, engaging in sexual activity in the presence of a child, and sexual assault.
A victim statement read aloud by the girl’s mother described her feeling it was "heartbreaking" that her daughter could not confide in her and noted the incident had affected her previously bubbly personality.
In mitigation, Ian West told the court that Hirchfield, with no previous criminal record, had a troubled upbringing and had faced the harsh reality of adult punishment after being held in custody for the past month.
Judge Ray Singh noted that although the defendant was blocked from messaging the girl in October, he continued to try to contact her and was intent on meeting for sexual purposes.
The judge sentenced Hirchfield to 26 months in a young offenders institution, imposed a Sexual Harm Prevention Order, and ordered registration as a sex offender for ten years.
