DARREN SHEARER FROM WORCESTER CAUGHT WITH CHILD ABUSE IMAGES IN BIRMINGHAM AND WORCESTER

In August 2013, Darren Shearer, a man residing on Newtown Road in Worcester, was sentenced to 20 months in prison at Worcester Crown Court after being found guilty of possessing and distributing a vast collection of indecent images of children.

The case revealed the disturbing extent of his activities, which involved the download and dissemination of thousands of such images to other paedophiles within online networks.

Shearer, aged 26 at the time, initially denied all allegations, claiming he had no involvement in the creation or sharing of the images.

However, police investigations uncovered a staggering total of 20,722 images on his electronic devices, with the majority classified as less severe, but over 300 categorized as the most serious.

Further searches of Shearer's desk at the BBC uncovered additional indecent material, intensifying the case against him.

When questioned by authorities, Shearer refused to comment, maintaining silence during police interviews.

He attempted to shift blame by asserting that images found on a BBC computer in Birmingham were downloaded by colleagues, not himself.

Nevertheless, he eventually admitted to 18 counts of making indecent images of children and five counts of distributing such images, but only after considerable investigation.

The evidence indicated that Shearer was actively involved in sharing graphic material depicting the sexual abuse of children, using chat messaging services to request and discuss such content with others.

Shearer’s employment history included work as a technical assistant for BBC Hereford and Worcester before transferring to the BBC’s outside broadcast unit at the Mailbox in Birmingham.

His employment was suspended immediately after the allegations surfaced, and he was formally dismissed in March 2013.

Authorities, led by Detective Constable Sarah Wood, seized computers, telephones, and other electronic devices during a raid on Shearer's residence in August 2011.

The high-tech crime unit’s forensic analysis provided irrefutable evidence of his distribution activities, revealing that he knowingly shared images and videos that graphically depicted the sexual abuse of children by adults.

During the trial, Shearer’s defense argued that he was a man of good character who had initially developed an interest in adult pornography, which later shifted towards teenagers and young men rather than children under the age of 13.

His lawyer, Daniel Oscroft, stated that no new material had been created on his computers for the past two years and emphasized that Shearer was remorseful for his past actions.

In addition to his prison sentence, the court imposed a 10-year sexual offences prevention order, restricting Shearer from accessing the internet without police approval and supervision.

His electronic devices were confiscated, and he was ordered to register as a sex offender for a decade.

The investigation also uncovered that Shearer used online chat services to solicit images and discuss the sexual abuse of children, highlighting the extent of his involvement in these criminal activities.

Police officials, including Detective Constable Sarah Wood, underscored the gravity of the case, emphasizing that each image represented a real child victim.

She stated, “Behind every child abuse image is an abused child, an exploited and helpless victim.

When these images are circulated online, they can live on forever.” The case has also led to the conviction of another individual, illustrating the broader impact of the investigation.

In July 2013, Shearer admitted to downloading tens of thousands of indecent images, including 270 classified as the most severe Level 5 category.

His offenses spanned from December 2008 to February of that year.

The court scheduled his sentencing for August 30, 2013.

A BBC spokesperson confirmed that Shearer was no longer employed by the corporation, having been suspended immediately upon the allegations and dismissed in March 2013, following the discovery of his criminal activities.
