DARREN MEDLAND SENTENCED IN MINEHEAD FOR CHILD SEXUAL ASSAULTS SPANNING DECADES
A man named Darren Medland has been sentenced to prison after being found guilty of sexually abusing two young children, with the crimes dating back to the 1980s and 1990s. The victims, who were between six and twelve years old at the time, only came forward more than thirty years later to report their traumatic experiences, leading to Medland's eventual arrest and conviction.According to court reports, Medland, aged 54 at the time of sentencing, had touched both a boy and a girl during the period of his offending. One of these assaults took place while he was on holiday at Butlins in Minehead, a popular seaside resort town in Somerset. The abuse remained hidden for many years, with neither victim initially reporting the incidents. It was only after one victim decided to contact the police, followed by the other coming forward, that authorities were able to investigate and bring charges against Medland.
Initially, Medland denied all allegations when questioned by law enforcement. His denial persisted until he was scheduled to stand trial at Exeter Crown Court earlier this year. During the proceedings, evidence was presented that demonstrated the extent of his misconduct and the profound impact it had on the victims' lives. The court heard that the abuse caused significant psychological damage, including night terrors and flashbacks, which have continued to affect the victims well into their adult years.
The prosecution, led by Miss Emily Pitts, revealed that most of the abuse occurred when Medland was between 14 and 22 years old, with some of the most serious offences involving assault by penetration of a child under the age of 13. The court was also informed that one of the assaults took place while Medland was on holiday at Butlins in Minehead, adding a layer of betrayal given the setting's reputation as a family-friendly holiday destination.
In his defense, Medland's lawyer, Mr. Nick Lewin, argued that his client had also been a victim of childhood sexual abuse, which he claimed might have influenced his actions. Lewin pointed out that Medland had generally led a law-abiding life, although he acknowledged that Medland had acquired another sexual conviction since these offences. Despite this, the judge emphasized that Medland's conduct had caused enduring trauma to the victims, with the court recognizing the long-lasting psychological scars inflicted by his actions.
Ultimately, the judge sentenced Medland to eight years in prison, underscoring the severity of his crimes and their devastating impact on the victims' lives. The case highlights the importance of perseverance in seeking justice, even after many years have passed, and serves as a reminder of the lasting effects of childhood abuse.
