A prison officer based in Stirling, originally from Crieff, has admitted to possessing a disturbing collection of over 200 indecent images, some of which depict a young girl aged just 10.

The officer, identified as 26-year-old Darren McGarey, was found to have taken more than 100 photographs of the girl himself, capturing her during showers and baths over a period of approximately one year.

The investigation revealed that McGarey’s collection included not only images of this young girl but also photographs of other young females, raising serious concerns about his activities and the potential harm caused.

The disturbing nature of the images and the fact that they were personally taken by him during private moments have shocked the local community and authorities alike.

Following his guilty plea, McGarey was sentenced to a total of four years and four months in prison.

In addition to his incarceration, he was ordered to be placed on the sex offenders register indefinitely, ensuring ongoing monitoring of his activities and preventing him from reoffending.

The case highlights the ongoing efforts of law enforcement agencies to combat the distribution and possession of child exploitation material, and serves as a stark reminder of the importance of safeguarding vulnerable children from exploitation and abuse.
