Darren Lavin

Birkenhead Sexual Abuser

June 2016 Schoolgirl’s video revealing she had been sexually abused was discovered by accident A heartbreaking video made by the victim of a sick paedophile unveiled years of abuse to her horrified family. The video clip, entitled “My Story”, was discovered by chance when the girl’s laptop was being fixed by a family friend. Judge Clement Goldstone, QC, sitting at Liverpool Crown Court , praised the clip as a “clarion call” for other victims of sexual abuse to come forward. The girl, then 13, had set the clip to music and held up flash cards detailing how she had been sexually abused from the age of six until the age of nine by Darren Lavin The court heard Lavin had also assaulted another girl, aged four, and encouraged her to touch him sexually during the same period. He pleaded guilty to the offences relating to the younger victim, but was found guilty after a trial of the offences revealed by the video clip. Lavin was due to be sentenced today for multiple sexual assaults, inciting a child to engage in sexual activity and engaging in sexual activity in the presence of a child. However problems with a pre sentence report meant the case was put back until July 27. Kenneth Grant, prosecuting, told the court that a friend of the family had been asked to repair the girl’s laptop in May last year. Mr Grant said: “He looked through the files and specifically the internet search history. He mentioned to her family that they ought to have a conversation with her. “What was found was a video clip showing her holding up flash cards detailing how she had been sexually abused by (Lavin).” Judge Goldstone said: “Yes it was a clarion call to those who might see the clip; if they had been sexually abused to have the courage to come forward.” The girl spoke to police and explained how Lavin, of Bridge Street in Birkenhead , had touched her sexually on at least four occasions between 2009 and 2010. Lavin had previously been handed a suspended sentence by Liverpool Youth Court in 2014 for sexual assault on girls aged 12 and 13 after speaking to them over social media. Mr Grant said Lavin had admitted “snogging” the girls after arranging to meet them. He admitting knowing how old they were and claimed to police he was “disgusted with himself.” Judge Goldstone said Lavin had “paedophilic tendencies” and asked for a full pre-sentence report to be prepared.
