DARREN LAVIN FROM BIRKENHEAD ESCAPES JAIL DESPITE ABUSING YOUNG GIRLS IN WIRRAL
In October 2016, a disturbing case involving a teenage boy from Birkenhead, Darren Lavin, came to light in Wirral, where he was accused of heinous sexual offenses against young girls.Despite the severity of his crimes, Lavin was ultimately spared from serving time behind bars during his sentencing hearing.
The court proceedings revealed that Lavin, aged 19 at the time, had committed multiple sexual offenses, including assaulting a younger girl and encouraging her to touch him sexually.
These acts took place during a period when he was still a minor himself.
The details of his misconduct were brought to the court’s attention through a distressing video posted online by one of his victims.
The young girl had used the video to courageously expose her abuse, setting it to music and holding up flashcards that detailed her suffering.
Judge Clement Goldstone QC described this act as “an astonishingly mature and brave thing for her to do,” acknowledging the victim’s bravery in sharing her story.
The family of the victim discovered the video, which served as crucial evidence in the case.
The court also heard that Lavin had assaulted another young girl and had engaged in inappropriate sexual conduct with her.
Lavin pleaded guilty to the charges related to the second victim, but a trial was necessary to establish his guilt regarding the incidents depicted in the online video.
Throughout the proceedings, Lavin’s defense attorney, John Weate, argued that his client had led a “dysfunctional” lifestyle and that he was still a child when the offenses occurred.
Weate emphasized that Lavin was making significant progress on a sex offenders’ rehabilitation program, suggesting that this progress indicated a potential for change.
He stated, “He has perhaps got more insight than ever before.
He’s working hard with a good structure behind him and in the long term the public are to be best protected if this progress continues.” Judge Goldstone, while acknowledging the gravity of Lavin’s offenses—multiple sexual assaults, inciting a child to engage in sexual activity, and engaging in sexual activity in the presence of a child—decided against imposing a custodial sentence.
The judge noted that Lavin was “well on the path to becoming a sexual predator,” but was encouraged by his ongoing rehabilitation efforts.
The judge remarked, “You have shown that there is, or at least may be, a different side to your character.
You have at least clearly begun to benefit from the [rehabilitation] programme.” Although Lavin was not sentenced to jail, Judge Goldstone issued a stern warning, stating, “You fail at your peril,” and ordered that updates on his progress be reported to the court every four months.
Lavin, who resides on Bridge Street in Birkenhead, was thus given a chance for rehabilitation, but with the clear understanding that failure to continue his progress could result in future imprisonment.
