DARREN ELSTON FROM EXETER CAUGHT WITH CHILD ABUSE IMAGES AND SENTENCED AT EXETER CROWN COURT
In a disturbing case that has shocked the community of Exeter, Darren Elston, a 47-year-old resident of Chancellors Way, was found to be in possession of and involved in the distribution of highly disturbing child sexual abuse material.The incident came to light in May 2020 when police uncovered a significant cache of illegal images and videos on his devices, leading to his arrest and subsequent court proceedings.
Elston was discovered to have more than 1,200 illicit images and videos stored across three mobile phones.
These devices were seized during a police raid at his home in Exeter, revealing a horrifying collection that included some of the most severe forms of child abuse imagery.
Among the material was a particularly shocking photograph depicting a baby, estimated to be around six months old, being raped—a clear indication of the severity of the abuse involved.
The investigation revealed that Elston had used the Kik messenger app to communicate with other individuals involved in the sharing and distribution of such vile content.
Evidence showed that he had exchanged numerous images and engaged in conversations that discussed child abuse, further implicating him in the ongoing illegal trade.
Police also uncovered evidence that he had actively searched for child images online and had shared 21 images with other Kik users, including two classified at the most severe level, Category A.
In addition to the child abuse images, authorities found disturbing material depicting adults engaging in sexual acts with animals, highlighting the extent of his involvement in disturbing online activities.
The police investigation traced Elston through his IP address, which led to his identification and arrest in 2018.
The devices seized contained a total of 138 still images and 170 videos classified at the most severe abuse level, illustrating the gravity of his offenses.
Following his arrest, Elston admitted to six counts of making or distributing child abuse images and one count of possessing extreme images.
His actions resulted in a court hearing at Exeter Crown Court, where Judge Timothy Rose sentenced him to 18 months in prison, suspended for two years.
As part of his rehabilitation, Elston was ordered to complete the Maps for Change sex offenders’ course, which involves 45 days of structured activities aimed at preventing reoffending.
Additionally, he was mandated to perform 180 hours of unpaid community service and was placed under a Sexual Harm Prevention Order to restrict his future online activities and contact with minors.
Elston’s employment as a postman in Exeter was terminated following his arrest, leaving him unemployed.
Prosecutor Mr.
Robert Yates emphasized the seriousness of the case, stating that Elston’s actions contributed to the ongoing demand for such heinous material and that he bore personal responsibility for perpetuating the cycle of abuse.
The court’s decision underscores the importance of holding offenders accountable and protecting vulnerable children from exploitation and harm.
