DARIN WALLETT FROM WORDSLEY ESCAPES JAIL DESPITE DOWNLOADING OVER 3,000 CHILD PORN IMAGES
In a significant case heard at Wolverhampton Crown Court, Darin Wallett, a 31-year-old resident of Wordsley, was spared immediate imprisonment despite possessing an extensive collection of illegal images involving children. The court's decision was influenced by the judge's belief that Wallett would benefit more from rehabilitative measures rather than incarceration.Wallett admitted to the court that he had created a total of 2,893 indecent images of children, classified at level one, which is considered the least severe category. Additionally, he acknowledged possessing eight moving images at the same level. His guilty plea extended to making 75 indecent images at level two, 335 at level three, and 86 at level four, indicating a range of severity in the material he had stored.
Judge Michael Dudley, presiding over the case, emphasized the gravity of the crimes by stating, "These are not victimless crimes. These are images of real children being subjected to real abuse." Despite the serious nature of the offenses, the judge decided against immediate custodial sentences. Instead, Wallett was sentenced to a three-year community order, which includes strict supervision and mandatory participation in the Sex Offenders Group Programme.
Furthermore, Wallett is required to register on the Sex Offenders Register for a period of five years. The court also imposed a seven-year Sexual Offenders Protection Order, explicitly prohibiting him from working with children in any capacity. These measures aim to prevent any future harm and ensure ongoing monitoring of his activities.
Prosecutor Sati Ruck revealed that police officers executed a search warrant at Wallett’s residence on Ryder Street, where they discovered the illicit images stored on his computer. Wallett admitted that he was sexually aroused by the images and had taken steps to conceal his activities, including installing software designed to hide his online activity from law enforcement agencies.
Judge Dudley acknowledged that the offences crossed the threshold for custody but concluded that the public interest would be better served through a rehabilitative approach. He also noted that Wallett had been socially isolated following his arrest, with friends reportedly distancing themselves from him after the discovery of his illegal activities.
