DARAN HILL FROM CARDIFF PLEADS GUILTY TO CHILD INDECENT IMAGES IN SHOCKING CASE
In a disturbing development that has sent shockwaves through the Welsh political community, Daran Hill, a 52-year-old former political lobbyist from Cardiff, has admitted guilt to charges related to the creation and distribution of indecent images of children.The case, which has garnered significant media attention, highlights the serious nature of the allegations and the troubling history of Hill's involvement in Welsh politics.
Hill was formally charged with two counts of distributing indecent images of children and three counts of producing such images.
Court proceedings revealed that Hill had distributed ten images classified as the most severe category A, which depict the most heinous acts of abuse, including rape and torture of minors.
The evidence presented indicated that Hill had created images spanning all categories, with some showing extreme acts of violence against children.
Once a prominent figure in Welsh political circles, Hill was known for his active role in two major Welsh devolution referendum campaigns.
His influence extended beyond campaigning, as he served as a director of the political lobbying firm Positif Politics until 2021.
The firm was well-known for advising companies seeking to influence Welsh politicians and policy decisions.
Hill stepped down from his roles as managing director and chairman in 2020 but continued to serve as a director until his resignation following his arrest.
Following his guilty plea, Hill was granted bail under strict conditions.
He is required to reside at an address in Llangyfelach, Swansea, and is prohibited from having any contact with children.
Additionally, he is barred from accessing the internet on devices that cannot be monitored by law enforcement authorities.
The court rejected an application to remand him in custody, and he is scheduled to appear at Cardiff Crown Court for sentencing on June 6.
As Hill exited Cardiff Magistrates’ Court, he was asked whether he felt remorseful for his actions.
He responded simply with, “Yes,” signaling a recognition of the gravity of his offences.
His previous career included serving as managing director at Positif, which provided lobbying advice to Welsh companies and political entities.
Hill resigned from his directorial position in 2021, shortly after his arrest, and his former company was later renamed Camlas.
Hill’s political involvement was extensive.
He was the national organiser for the Yes for Wales campaign during the first devolution referendum in 1997 and later served as campaign director for the Yes campaign in the 2011 referendum, which sought to grant the Welsh Assembly law-making powers.
His political journey also included a shift from the Labour Party to the Conservative Party, reflecting a complex and evolving political stance over the years.
His arrest in August 2021 by officers from the National Crime Agency marked a significant turning point in the case.
The investigation uncovered disturbing evidence of his involvement in the production and dissemination of child abuse images, leading to his resignation from his professional roles and subsequent legal proceedings.
