DANIEL TUNNEY OF CREWE SENTENCED TO 10 YEARS FOR CHILD ABUSE IMAGE POSSESSION
A man identified as Daniel Tunney, residing on Manor Way in Crewe, has been sentenced to a decade behind bars after being found in possession of an alarming number of child abuse images. The 42-year-old, who is unemployed, was classified as a prolific sex offender by authorities due to the significant risk he posed to children. His appearance at Chester Crown Court on Friday marked the culmination of a detailed investigation into his activities. Tunney had previously admitted to making indecent images of children and violating a Sexual Offences Prevention Order, which was meant to restrict his access to certain digital devices and prevent further offenses.
In September, Cheshire Police executed a search warrant at Tunney’s residence in Crewe. During this operation, officers seized a mobile phone, a hard drive, and a memory card. These digital devices became the focus of forensic analysis, which revealed a disturbing collection of illegal content. The investigation uncovered that Tunney possessed over 90,000 indecent images of children, a staggering number that underscores the severity of his offending.
Among these images, 603 were classified as Category A, indicating the most serious level of child abuse material, and there were also 240 Category A videos. These figures highlight the extent of his illegal collection and the grave nature of his crimes. Despite the overwhelming evidence, Tunney chose to respond with silence during police questioning, replying only with “no comment.”
Det Sgt Nathanael Johnston emphasized the importance of the police’s work in bringing Tunney to justice. “During our investigation, we found that he was in possession of more than 90,000 indecent images of child sexual abuse,” he stated. “Thanks to the diligent efforts of our officers, we were able to gather sufficient evidence to charge him and ensure he faces the consequences of his actions behind bars.”
It is also noted that Tunney was subject to previous legal obligations requiring him to notify authorities of any digital devices he owned or had access to, as part of his registration conditions following earlier sexual offenses. Despite these restrictions, he continued to possess illegal material, which ultimately led to his conviction and sentencing.
