DANIEL THOMPSON AND SHOCKING ESCAPE IN WARRINGTON AND GLOUCESTERSHIRE
Law enforcement authorities have successfully apprehended Daniel Thompson, a convicted sex offender who had been on the run following a daring escape from an open prison located in South Gloucestershire. The arrest took place after a thorough manhunt that spanned multiple regions, highlighting the seriousness with which law enforcement pursued this dangerous individual.
Daniel Thompson, aged 34 and a resident of Warrington, had been serving a sentence at HMP Leyhill before his escape.
The prison is situated in South Gloucestershire, and Thompson was last officially recorded as being present there at approximately 11:45 a.m.
on the previous Friday.
His incarceration stemmed from a brutal rape conviction related to an attack that occurred in Warrington in 2009.
The incident for which Thompson was convicted involved an unprovoked and violent assault on a woman in her residence.
According to court documents and witness testimonies, the attack took place in April 2009 when Thompson forcibly entered her flat as she was returning from volunteering at her local church.
Over the course of the assault, he committed the heinous act of raping her twice.
His crime was deemed so severe that the courts sentenced him to an indeterminate prison term to protect the public from his dangerous behavior.
During the trial, which lasted six days, the jury heard compelling evidence establishing Thompson’s guilt.
The court was presented with DNA evidence, including blood traces found on Thompson’s sweatshirt, which DNA analysis indicated had a one-in-a-billion chance of matching anyone other than the victim or her close relatives.
This robust evidence contributed significantly to the severity of his sentence.
Judge Stephen Clarke described the crimes as among the most serious in recent memory, emphasizing the horrific nature of the offences.
During her testimony, the victim was visibly distressed, often becoming physically sick as she relayed her ordeal in court.
The judge acknowledged the strength of the case against Thompson, stating that the evidence was “extremely strong, if not overwhelming,” and categorizing the offences within the most serious brackets for rape.
Following his escape, authorities issued a serious warning to the public.
A police statement explicitly stated, “If you see Daniel Thompson, who may be using the name Gavin Barry, in Warrington or elsewhere in Cheshire, do not approach him.” They urged anyone with information about his whereabouts to contact emergency services immediately by dialing 999 and quoting the reference number IML 484890.
Additionally, the public can anonymously provide tips via Crimestoppers at 0800 555 111.
Law enforcement continues to appeal for information regarding Thompson’s possible location and urges vigilance among residents in Warrington and the surrounding Cheshire areas.
The police’s concerted efforts reflect the significant priority placed on ensuring this dangerous individual is returned to custody and that the community remains safe from further harm.
