DANIEL THOMAS FROM DERBY CAUGHT WITH OVER 500 CHILD INDECENT IMAGES AND DISTURBING WEB CHAT EXCHANGES

In October 2016, a disturbing case emerged involving Daniel Thomas, a man from Derby who was found to possess an alarming collection of over 500 indecent images of children on his personal computer. The authorities also uncovered evidence that Thomas engaged in web-based conversations that revealed his disturbing fantasies and intentions.

According to reports presented at Derby Crown Court, Thomas, aged 36 at the time, led what was described as a 'sad and solitary life.' This lifestyle, the court was told, contributed to his vulnerability to the darker corners of the internet, where he actively searched for and downloaded illicit material involving minors. The investigation revealed that his online activity was not limited to mere possession; it also included sharing and discussing his disturbing thoughts in web chats.

Prosecutor Raglan Ashton detailed some of the content of these conversations, which were particularly graphic and disturbing. During the chats, Thomas was asked whether he had ever raped a boy, to which he responded, 'no, but I might do.' When questioned about the age of his potential victims, he replied, 'the younger the better.' These exchanges painted a chilling picture of his predatory mindset.

Law enforcement officers executing a search warrant at Thomas’s residence on Parker Street in Derby discovered a total of 544 indecent images of children. Of these, 138 were classified as the most serious Category A images, indicating the highest level of harm and depravity. Additionally, investigators found 98 images categorized as 'extreme' pornography, which depicted adult men and women engaging in sexual acts with animals.

Further analysis of his online activity revealed that Thomas had used specific search terms such as 'boy sex with animal' and 'boy and girl sex,' indicating a disturbing interest in both minors and bestiality. The images and videos ranged in the ages of the children depicted from around 10 years old to early teenagers. However, the primary concern was the explicit chat logs, which contained graphic and highly disturbing language. These logs provided insight into Thomas’s disturbing fantasies and mindset, which the prosecution described as revealing a troubling background.

When questioned by detectives during his arrest, Thomas claimed that the web chats in which he discussed the possibility of raping children were merely a 'wind-up,' attempting to dismiss the seriousness of his online conduct. Despite this, he pleaded guilty to three counts of possessing indecent images and one count of possessing extreme pornography.

It is noteworthy that the court did not mention any legal action against the other individual involved in the web chats with Thomas, suggesting that the focus was solely on his conduct.

Representing Thomas, solicitor Samina Rashid acknowledged his remorse, stating, 'He does not make excuses for his behaviour but he has had a very difficult year during this period. He lost a very close friend he had known since childhood and watched him deteriorate through illness, which made him very depressed himself.'

In sentencing, Judge Peter Cooke imposed a three-year community order, emphasizing the seriousness of Thomas’s actions. The judge remarked, 'You appear to be someone that leads a sad and solitary life and you have fallen prey to the darker reaches of the internet. This is two men perverted by the material they have viewed indulging each other in an orgy of fantasy they were not going to re-enact.'

Alongside the community order, which requires Thomas to participate in regular community sex offender group work aimed at addressing his offending behavior, he was also handed a five-year sexual harm prevention order. Additionally, he was required to sign the sex offenders register, ensuring ongoing monitoring of his activities to protect the community from further harm.
