DANIEL SPENCE'S HORRIFIC CRIME IN HULL: BABYSITTER ABUSES YOUNG GIRLS AND IS SENTENCED TO 12 YEARS
In December 2013, a disturbing case emerged from Hull involving a local babysitter named Daniel Lee Spence, aged 29, who was convicted of a series of heinous sexual offenses against two young girls.The case came to light after one of the victims, who was only 14 at the time, broke down at school and disclosed the abuse she had endured, prompting authorities to investigate.
Spence, who had been trusted by the families to care for their children, exploited this trust by targeting the girls in their own homes.
His predatory behavior spanned from 2004 to 2011, during which he would wait until the parents of the victims left before initiating his abuse.
The youngest of the victims was just four years old when the abuse began, highlighting the severity and duration of his crimes.
Despite maintaining his innocence throughout the trial, Spence was found guilty by a jury of nine sexual offenses committed against the two girls.
The court proceedings revealed a seven-year reign of terror, during which Spence manipulated and exploited the innocence of his young victims.
The conviction was secured earlier in the month, and he was brought back to Hull Crown Court for sentencing.
During the sentencing hearing, Judge Mark Bury condemned Spence’s actions, emphasizing his lack of remorse.
The judge stated, “The girls were abused in their own homes.
You babysat them and they trusted you.
You denied these offences and you have shown absolutely no remorse – even to this day.” The judge also noted the betrayal of trust involved in the case, as Spence’s victims had confided in him, believing he was a safe and caring adult.
The mother of one of the victims expressed her heartbreak, saying, “These two girls will never be the same again.
We are devastated with what has happened – it is sickening.
We just wish we had found out earlier to have put a stop to this so much sooner.” The father of another victim echoed these sentiments, adding, “We regret trusting this man.
He seemed a quiet guy.
We can’t believe this happened and in our own homes – it is disgusting.” Spence’s defense attorney, Anil Murray, attempted to provide some context, stating that Spence had faced difficulties in his youth, including illiteracy and social isolation.
However, these mitigating factors did little to sway the court’s judgment.
Humberside Police praised the bravery of the victims and their families throughout the investigation and court process.
Detective Constable Julie Kitchen of Hull’s public protection team commended the victims’ courage, saying, “I would like to praise the two girls in this case as they were very brave and the families were patient during the investigation and court proceeding.
Mr Spence abused a position of trust in order to commit the offences while alone with the children over many years.” Following his conviction, Daniel Spence was placed on the sex offenders register for life, ensuring ongoing monitoring of his activities.
The case serves as a stark reminder of the importance of vigilance and trust within families and communities, and the relentless efforts of law enforcement to bring such offenders to justice.
