DANIEL SMITH JAILED FOR SEXUAL ASSAULT ON TEENAGE GIRL ON BLACKBURN TRAIN
In June 2016, a man named Daniel Smith was sentenced to six months in prison after committing a disturbing sexual assault on a 16-year-old girl aboard a train traveling to Blackburn. The incident took place on the evening of June 10, 2015, and the court proceedings revealed the harrowing details of the attack.
According to the Blackburn Magistrates Court, Daniel Smith, aged 28 and of no fixed address, targeted the young girl while she was on the 8.55 pm train service from Preston to Mill Hill Station in Blackburn.
The victim, who is legally protected from being named, was sitting alone when Smith entered the carriage and sat directly beside her.
Despite her efforts to maintain her personal space, Smith began making inappropriate and lewd comments, which caused the girl to feel increasingly distressed.
As the girl attempted to distance herself from Smith, he escalated his misconduct by touching her chest.
She repeatedly asked him to stop, but he refused to cease his inappropriate behavior.
When she tried to move away, Smith, who was sitting on her bag straps, deliberately refused to shift his position, effectively trapping her and preventing her from leaving her seat.
The girl’s fear and discomfort grew as the assault continued.
Eventually, the girl managed to escape from the train at Mill Hill Station.
She immediately sought help and raised the alarm at a nearby shop close to the station.
Her quick action was crucial in initiating the police response.
A British Transport Police officer identified Smith at Preston station shortly afterward and took him into custody.
Following his arrest, the police investigation proceeded swiftly.
Sergeant Peter Wilcock, the investigating officer, commented on the case, stating, “This young girl was left terrified and severely distressed by the actions of Smith.
She left the train shaken and crying, and she reported what had happened immediately, which helped us make an almost immediate arrest.
This prevented Smith from potentially harming any other victims.” Sergeant Wilcock emphasized the importance of public cooperation in combating sexual misconduct on public transport, highlighting the success of their “Report It to Stop It” campaign.
This initiative encourages passengers to report any unwanted sexual behavior, aiding law enforcement in bringing offenders to justice.
Daniel Smith was subsequently charged and sentenced to six months in jail.
In addition to his imprisonment, he was ordered to pay an £80 victim surcharge and was placed on the sex offenders register for a period of seven years.
The case underscores the ongoing efforts by authorities to protect individuals from sexual harassment and assault on the railway network, reaffirming their commitment to ensuring safety and accountability in public transportation.
