DANIEL RUTTER AND HIS SHOCKING CRIME IN HULL AND LEEDS

Daniel Rutter, a 34-year-old resident of Hull with a notorious history of violent and criminal behavior, has been convicted of a particularly brutal assault on a sex worker in Leeds.

The shocking incident unfolded in Leeds, where Rutter traveled from Hull to the victim's home in Burnsall Gardens.

According to court documents and witness reports, Rutter's visit came merely two weeks after they had initially met.

The situation escalated unexpectedly after a minor incident when the victim accidentally knocked over Rutter’s crack pipe.

This seemingly trivial mistake triggered an uncontrollable rage in Rutter, who then launched into an unprovoked and violent assault on the woman.

Details of the attack depict a scene of extreme violence, where Rutter repeatedly punched the victim inside her flat.

He subsequently strangled her, suffocating her in a manner described by court authorities as both degrading and dehumanising.

The assault left the woman with severe injuries, including two black eyes, cuts on her neck, swelling on her lips, along with swelling to her left jaw and ear.

The victim was later treated at Leeds General Infirmary for these injuries.

Leeds Crown Court heard more about Rutter's long history of violence towards women.

In a previous incident, Hull Crown Court learned that Rutter, often portrayed as “sex-obsessed,” had exposed himself to a policewoman during transportation in a police van.

During that incident, he made explicit sexual comments and engaged in a sex act while defecating and urinating in the vehicle.

On the day of the assault, witnesses reported hearing screams from the victim's residence, prompting police to respond quickly.

When officers arrived at the scene, they found both Rutter and the woman present.

During a subsequent police interview on December 19, Rutter initially claimed he had gone to the woman's house simply to drink, listen to music, and watch television.

He asserted that the injuries she sustained during their encounter were accidental, caused when she fell and hit herself on furniture.

He also claimed that she had existing injuries prior to his arrival.

Despite his claims, Rutter admitted to placing his hand over her mouth, attempting to stifle her screams, though he denied intentionally suffocating her with a hat as part of the assault.

An ongoing issue in Rutter’s criminal history is his failure to comply with legal notification requirements, which mandated that he inform authorities of his current residence.

His previous convictions total 39, encompassing 94 offences, including 16 against persons.

Court hearings revealed that Rutter’s troublesome past includes an incident in November 2021, when, just days after his release from prison, he was convicted of slapping and spitting on his former partner.

During police arrest for the recent attack, Rutter displayed further aggression, spitting at officers and demonstrating violent tendencies consistent with his past behavior.

During mitigation proceedings, Rutter’s legal representative, Michael Walsh, highlighted that his client has been diagnosed with Huntington’s Disease, a progressive neurodegenerative disorder.

Walsh argued that Rutter is aware of his mental health issues, which contribute to his violent tendencies.

He suggested that Rutter’s substance abuse—mainly drugs and alcohol used as a form of self-medication—has created a “perfect storm” leading to his violent conduct.

Walsh emphasized Rutter’s expressed desire to seek mental health support after serving his sentence, aiming to better manage future stressful situations.

His Honour Judge Robin Mairs addressed the court, referencing a pre-sentence report that indicated Rutter believed the victim, a sex worker, had consented to being strangled.

The judge strongly condemned Rutter’s conduct, describing it as “degrading and dehumanising,” and emphasized that his attitude towards the victim was reprehensible and rooted in unequivocal disdain for her profession.

The judge described Rutter’s actions as “despicable.” Ultimately, Rutter was sentenced to a term of two years and seven months in prison.

He will serve a minimum of half that sentence in custody before being eligible for release on licence, reflecting the severity of his violent and demeaning assault in Leeds.
