BURNLEY MAN JAILED FOR DELIBERATE ATTACK ON BABY CAUSING PERMANENT DISABILITIES
A man known as Daniel Plumb, aged 35, from Burnley, was sentenced to 13 years in prison after deliberately attacking a three-month-old baby, causing permanent disabilities. The court heard that Plumb threw the infant against a sofa with such force that he bounced off the back, and also yanked him by the legs and struck him on the head.
He explained to police that his actions were triggered by the baby pulling his beard, stating, “I got very, very angry, very, very fast.” He further claimed that when he realized the baby wasn't breathing, he panicked, shaking him and pinching him at pressure points on his hands, feet, and legs in an attempt to elicit a response.
The court was told Plumb spent 40 minutes googling terms like ‘three month old seems comatose’ and ‘three month old twitching’ but did not call an ambulance.
The following day, the infant was admitted to a neonatal intensive care unit with severe injuries including skull fractures, brain bleeding, facial bruises, and retinal hemorrhages.
The injuries resulted in the child being diagnosed with cerebral palsy, affecting his cognitive and mobility functions permanently.
Plumb admitted to causing these injuries and revealed he had kicked the baby so hard in his baby bouncer that he was almost ejected from the seat, but he denied being violent.
The court heard that Plumb was fully prepared to accept punishment, with his defense stating he hates himself for what happened.
Judge Sara Dodd sentenced him to 13 years in prison and imposed a five-year extended license to protect the public and children, considering him a dangerous individual due to the high risk of reoffending and the lasting impact of his actions.
