DANIEL MCCREEDY'S HORRIFIC ANIMAL ABUSE IN UCKFIELD LEADS TO COURT SENTENCE

In a disturbing case of animal cruelty, Daniel McCreedy, a resident of Uckfield, East Sussex, was convicted in 2017 for a brutal assault on a defenseless dog. Born on May 11, 1984, McCreedy, who at the time was living on Selby Rise in Uckfield, was found guilty of subjecting a Staffordshire bull terrier cross, known as Babe, to severe and unreasonable violence.

The incident took place on April 13, 2017, at the Royal Oak pub in Lewes, East Sussex. CCTV footage captured McCreedy carrying out a prolonged and vicious attack on Babe, which lasted approximately 20 minutes. The footage revealed McCreedy punching the dog 36 times, kicking him four times, choking him twice with a lead, and even pouring beer over his head. The graphic nature of the footage shocked viewers and played a crucial role in the case.

RSPCA Inspector Tony Woodley, who led the investigation, described the footage as heart-breaking and stomach-churning. He emphasized the dog's submissive demeanor and the unwarranted nature of the abuse. Inspector Woodley stated, “This dog is completely subordinate and this prolonged period of abuse is totally unwarranted and frankly disturbing. The poor dog is just absolutely terrified and also confused. One minute McCreedy is hitting him repeatedly in the head, the next minute he is cuddling the dog in a bid to pretend he is a caring animal owner. It is just horrific to see.”

Inspector Woodley further explained that a veterinarian who reviewed the footage confirmed that Babe was undoubtedly caused pain and suffering during the attack. Fortunately, Babe did not sustain any lasting physical injuries, but the trauma inflicted was significant. The inspector expressed gratitude to witnesses and the landlady who provided CCTV footage, which led to McCreedy’s identification and subsequent arrest.

Following the court proceedings, Babe’s owner, James Hardaker from Moulsecoomb, shared the emotional impact of the incident. He explained that Babe, who was once very friendly, now barks at people out of fear. Hardaker revealed that he has been advised to consider euthanasia but is determined to re-train Babe in hopes of restoring his previous temperament.

In sentencing, McCreedy received a 12-month community order, including 20 days of mental health rehabilitation and an eight-week curfew. He was also ordered to pay £300 in costs and an £85 government surcharge. Additionally, he was disqualified from having any contact with animals until further notice, reflecting the seriousness of his actions and the court’s stance on animal cruelty.
