DANIEL GUNSON OF WARRINGTON SENTENCED FOR CHILD ABUSE IMAGES AT CHESTER CROWN COURT
In a disturbing case that has shocked the community of Warrington, Daniel Gunson, aged 45, was sentenced to 15 months in prison after being found guilty of possessing a vast and disturbing collection of child abuse images. The court proceedings took place at Chester Crown Court, where Gunson appeared to face the serious charges that had been brought against him.
Gunson, who resides in Hollybank, Moore, was previously charged with multiple offences related to indecent images and extreme pornography involving animals.
He had pleaded not guilty to six counts, which included possession and creation of indecent images, possession of prohibited images, and viewing extreme material involving animals.
However, after a series of legal proceedings, he changed his plea in April, leading to his conviction.
The investigation into Gunson’s activities began when police seized several digital devices from his residence, including a laptop, an external hard drive, and a Samsung mobile phone.
These devices were subjected to detailed forensic analysis, revealing an alarming collection of over 12,500 images and videos depicting the sexual abuse of children, ranging from infants to teenagers.
The authorities confirmed that the total number of images discovered was approximately 30,000, with an additional 138,524 files that had not yet been examined.
Prosecutor Sarah Badrawy outlined the severity of the material found, noting that the images spanned a range of categories from the most severe, Category A, to less serious, Category C.
The court was shown examples of the content, which included distressing footage of infants in pain and suffering during sexual abuse episodes that lasted nearly two hours.
The imagery was described as deviant and deeply disturbing, highlighting the extent of Gunson’s involvement in viewing and possessing such material.
Judge Patrick Thompson provided further details, emphasizing the public’s right to be aware of the nature of the material that offenders like Gunson are viewing.
He explained that the images included scenes of children being subjected to sexual acts, some involving extreme violence and distress.
The police investigation revealed that the images were categorized as follows: 2,951 items in Category A, 3,244 in Category B, and 6,392 in Category C.
In addition to the images, police found that Gunson’s internet search history was filled with terms and themes related to child sexual abuse, indicating a persistent interest in such material.
The case also uncovered that Gunson had a prior history of viewing indecent images, with a former partner discovering his interest in such material as far back as 1996.
Gunson claimed ignorance about how the images ended up on his computer, asserting that he had obtained his device from someone else and was unaware of the content.
During the court hearing, Gunson appeared in a grey suit, purple shirt, and thick black-rimmed glasses, standing silently and expressionless as the judge detailed the charges.
Family members of Gunson, notably elderly relatives, covered their mouths in shock as Judge Thompson laid out the gravity of the offences, stating that the only appropriate sentence was imprisonment.
Defense counsel Simon Parry argued that Gunson had no previous convictions and highlighted that he had received an indication of a 20% to 25% reduction in sentence for his guilty plea from another judge.
Parry requested that Gunson be considered for a suspended sentence so he could participate in a sexual offenders treatment program, which would not be available if he were sent to prison.
The defense also pointed to a probation report that assessed Gunson as being of 'low risk' of reoffending, a claim that the judge dismissed as 'utterly astonishing.' Ultimately, Judge Patrick Thompson imposed a significant sentence, including a 10-year order to prevent sexual harm and a requirement for Gunson to register as a sex offender for the same period.
The judge condemned Gunson’s claims of ignorance, stating, “You entered a defence statement claiming you knew nothing of this material that it somehow appeared on your computer.
You said you had obtained your computer from someone else and it was their responsibility.
That wasn’t the case at all.
You were the person who had downloaded it and you were the person with a deviant interest in material of this kind, material of children being raped, from babies to teenage children.
You seem to have an interest in all of that.” He concluded with a stark warning, emphasizing that individuals like Gunson are responsible for the continued abuse of children, stating, “If it wasn’t for people like you with this deviant interest, these children would not be getting raped so I’m afraid you bear responsibility.”
