A former youth worker for Moray Council, Daniel Edwards, aged 39, has been sentenced to eight months in jail after abusing his position of trust by engaging in sexual activities with a schoolgirl who was between 16 and 17 years old.
The incidents took place over a period of two years, from 2013 to 2015.
Edwards, of Clergy Street in Macduff, was involved in sex acts, had sex, and also sent the girl sexual text messages and photographs via mobile phone.
During the court proceedings at Elgin Sheriff Court, his defence lawyer, Stephen Carty, stated that the sexual contact occurred when the girl was over the age of 16, acknowledged that the act was an abuse of his trust, but emphasized that there was no grooming or coercion involved.
Sheriff Chris Dickson recognized the gravity of the offense, which involved a vulnerable young girl, and sentenced Edwards to eight months in custody, additionally placing him on the sex offenders’ register for ten years.
The court explicitly stated that Edwards would not be allowed to work with children or vulnerable persons in the future.
