DANIEL CHRISTIAN HOLDEN JAILED FOR FOUR YEARS IN CUMBRIA AFTER ATTACK IN KEWICK

A man who assaulted his wife with an ice axe has been sentenced to four years in prison. Daniel Christian Holden, 55, struck his partner three times during the assault at their guesthouse in Keswick, Cumbria, causing her to bleed extensively and have difficulty speaking. Holden reportedly told police that he 'actually meant to murder her' and claimed he had been 'mentally unwell.' Originally charged with attempted murder, Holden pleaded guilty to wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm and was sentenced at Carlisle Crown Court.

The incident took place on July 5, when Holden called emergency services shortly before 07:30 BST, informing them: 'I've attacked my wife. She's very badly injured.' A guest at the property had heard raised voices in the hours prior, and a neighbour also reported hearing shouting. Upon arrival, the first police officer was told by Holden that 'she might drop dead at any second.' As the police were taking him away, Holden expressed remorse, telling his wife, 'I'm going to jail. I'm so sorry. I love you.'

The victim recounted being summoned to a bedroom by her husband, who then sat her on a bed before attacking her, resulting in a fractured skull and bruising to the brain. Fortunately, she has since recovered and plans to return to work as a therapist. Prior to the attack, Holden had been described as delusional and paranoid, suffering from anxiety related to unresolved health issues. His wife informed police of his previous habits, including alcohol and drug use, as well as unemployment. She expressed her desire not to press charges or criminally prosecute him, instead hoping he would receive professional help.

During sentencing, Judge Nicholas Barker mentioned that Holden's wife had written him a letter begging for mercy. Addressing Holden directly, the judge stated, 'I do accept, Daniel Holden, that you are deeply remorseful for your actions,' but emphasizing the severity of the incident, he added, 'Within your mental state, there was a premeditation to your actions. This was not an off-the-cuff, spontaneous event.'
