SCARBOROUGH SEX OFFENDER DANIEL BUSHBY SENTENCED FOR CHILD RAPE AND ASSAULT

In December 2018, Daniel Lee Bushby, a resident of Nelson Street in Scarborough, was sentenced to a lengthy prison term after being convicted of multiple serious sexual offenses. The case, heard at York Crown Court, revealed a disturbing pattern of abuse involving a young girl of primary school age and a woman who was sleeping at the time of the incident.

Prosecutor Jeremy Hill-Baker detailed that Bushby had sexually assaulted the young girl on several occasions, with the abuse leaving her profoundly affected. The victim, who is not related to Bushby, was subjected to repeated assaults that had a devastating impact on her mental health. Her mother, in a heartfelt victim personal statement, expressed her ongoing fears, stating, “I am scared I would go up to her room and find her dead,” highlighting the severity of her daughter’s emotional trauma.

The court heard that Bushby’s abuse of the girl was not an isolated incident. On one occasion, the girl had gone to sleep at a friend’s house and awoke to find Bushby raping her. At the time of this assault, Bushby was on bail for previous abuse charges involving the same girl, which underscores a troubling pattern of behavior and disregard for legal restrictions.

In addition to the abuse of the young girl, Bushby was also convicted of raping a woman while she was asleep. The woman was unaware of the assault at the time, and Bushby’s actions further demonstrated his dangerous and predatory nature.

Judge Andrew Stubbs QC described Bushby as a dangerous individual who posed a significant risk of committing more serious sexual crimes in the future. As a result, he was sentenced to an extended term of 17 years in prison, followed by an additional six years on extended license. The court also imposed a lifelong sexual harm prevention order and a restraining order to restrict Bushby’s contact with victims and prevent further offending.

Furthermore, Bushby was ordered to remain on the sex offenders’ register for life, reflecting the gravity of his crimes. It is noteworthy that Bushby had no prior convictions before these offenses, making his actions even more alarming. The sentencing underscores the court’s recognition of the serious threat posed by Bushby and the need to protect the community from future harm.
