DANIEL ALAMEHMET CAUGHT WITH LIBRARY OF INDECENT IMAGES IN LITTLEMORE AND OXFORD

In June 2017, a disturbing case unfolded involving Daniel Alamehmet, a former paediatrician from Oxford, who was found to possess an extensive collection of illegal images depicting child abuse. The incident drew significant attention due to the nature and volume of the material, as well as Alamehmet's professional background and the locations involved.

Alamehmet, aged 34 at the time, was discovered to have begun viewing thousands of indecent images and videos of children as young as five years old just three months after he resigned from his medical position. His online activity revealed a disturbing pattern of searching for and collecting such material, which he kept in a personal 'library' of illicit content. This collection included over 1,600 photographs and more than 570 videos, some of which were shared with other individuals involved in similar illegal activities.

The police investigation was initiated after authorities raided Alamehmet’s residence in Littlemore, Oxford, on June 28 of the previous year. During the search, law enforcement officers seized his computer and discovered a vast trove of illegal images stored on his devices. Additionally, more than 1,300 indecent images were located on peer-to-peer file-sharing networks, indicating that he had been actively downloading and sharing such material for some time.

According to prosecutor Cathy Olliver, Alamehmet had been actively searching for illegal content online since December 2013. He reportedly saved the images and videos repeatedly, viewing them over and over again, which demonstrated a clear pattern of ongoing engagement with this illicit material. His online activities and possession of these images raised serious concerns about his potential danger to children, although he claimed he was not a threat.

Throughout the court proceedings, Alamehmet admitted to possessing indecent photographs of children for his own viewing and to three counts of making such images between December 29, 2013, and June 28 of the previous year. His professional history included working at Wolverhampton’s West Park Hotel in 2010, then at the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford in 2011. He later worked in Milton Keynes in 2012 and at Stoke Mandeville Hospital before resigning in September 2013.

During sentencing, Judge Zoe Smith expressed her disapproval of Alamehmet’s actions, particularly highlighting the vast number of images he possessed depicting children being tortured. She handed him a two-year prison sentence, suspended for two years, emphasizing the severity of his hoarding of such material. The judge also mandated that he participate in a 25-day rehabilitation activity requirement, a sex offenders treatment program, and a sexual harm prevention order. Furthermore, Alamehmet was ordered to register as a sex offender for ten years, pay costs of £750, and a victim surcharge, underscoring the seriousness of his crimes and the ongoing legal obligations he faces.
