DAN NORRIS ARRESTED ON SUSPICION OF SERIOUS OFFENCES IN THE WEST OF ENGLAND
Staff working for Dan Norris, the mayor of the West of England and MP for North East Somerset and Hanham, are receiving support following his recent arrest. Norris was questioned on suspicion of multiple serious offences, including rape and child sex offences, and was subsequently released on conditional bail on Friday. A BBC source disclosed that senior officials have convened to discuss the incident and are in contact with Avon and Somerset Police to offer support to colleagues. An internal email acknowledged the distress caused by the event and reassured staff that police are handling the investigation with a victim-centered approach. The police confirmed that a man in his 60s, identified as Dan Norris, was arrested in connection with allegations of non-recent child sex offences from the 2000s, along with a rape allegation from the 2020s. The investigation, designated Operation Bluestone, is still in its early stages, and the victim is receiving appropriate support. As the election for the new West of England mayor approaches on May 1, Norris will not be seeking re-election and will refrain from making key decisions during this period.
The Labour Party has suspended Norris's whip, and he has not attended Parliament due to the ongoing police investigation. Norris's arrest is part of a broader probe that originated from a referral by another police force in December 2024 concerning alleged offences from the past, primarily in the 2000s. Authorities stressed that any contact from staff with police will be taken seriously, with police committed to supporting victims and those affected.
Norris’s election agent expressed shock at the news, confirming that Norris has been immediately suspended from the Labour Party. The police confirmed Norris was arrested on suspicion of child sex offences and rape, and investigations are ongoing. The 65-year-old, who was elected in 2024 succeeding Conservative MP Jacob Rees-Mogg, remains at the center of a developing case as police continue to assist survivors and pursue the allegations.
