DAN MORTIMOR SHOCKS PLYMOUTH WITH SEXUAL ASSAULT IN BEAUMONT PARK
In a disturbing incident that has sent shockwaves through the community of Plymouth, a 17-year-old girl was subjected to a sexual assault while walking her dog in Beaumont Park.The assault occurred in August of the previous year, and the perpetrator, identified as 38-year-old Dan Mortimor, was later brought to justice following a detailed court trial.
According to court proceedings, Mortimor, who resides on Egerton Road in the St Judes area of Plymouth, approached the young woman and engaged her in conversation.
During this encounter, he placed his arm around her shoulders, an act that lasted approximately four seconds, before moving his hand onto her inner thigh.
The victim described feeling overwhelmed and physically ill during the assault, stating she felt as if she was about to vomit.
Her distress was compounded by the fact that Mortimor knew her slightly, which added a layer of discomfort and fear to the situation.
The young woman recounted that she initially encountered Mortimor on the street, where he followed her to Beaumont Park despite her efforts to call and message her boyfriend for support.
She explained that she was feeling stressed and on the verge of tears, trying to find an escape from the situation.
Her anxiety increased as Mortimor’s behavior became increasingly sinister, with his conversation turning unsettling and his actions invasive.
During the trial at Plymouth Crown Court, the jury heard that the victim managed to escape when her boyfriend arrived at the scene.
She immediately contacted the police, who arrived promptly and identified Mortimor as the suspect.
Despite his arrest, Mortimor denied any sexual contact with the girl, claiming that he had never touched her inappropriately.
However, the evidence presented was sufficient for a majority verdict of 11-1 in favor of conviction.
In addition to the sexual assault charge, Mortimor admitted to offering to supply a Class B drug, specifically cannabis.
He explained to the court that he was smoking a joint at the time and claimed he could obtain cannabis for the girl, which further complicated his case.
Judge William Mousley has decided to adjourn sentencing until March 4, allowing probation officers to prepare a comprehensive report on Mortimor’s background and mental health status.
The judge has remanded Mortimor back into custody until the sentencing date, emphasizing the seriousness of the offense and the need for thorough assessment before a final judgment is made.
