NEWCASTLE MAN CAUGHT IN GROOMING SCHEME FACES SUSPENDED SENTENCE
A man named Damien Morton, aged 22, from Benwell, Newcastle, was involved in attempting to groom a 13-year-old girl through social media.
The incident was caught on camera by vigilant groups Dark Justice, who operate to catch men seeking sexual activity with minors.
Newcastle Crown Court heard that Morton believed he was communicating with a teen girl named Charlotte on the social media platform Tagged.
The court was told how Morton continued to groom the girl on WhatsApp, discussing his desire to have sex with her.
He arranged to meet her at Manors Metro Station in Newcastle on March 3, where he was met by police and Dark Justice members.
Morton admitted to attempting to meet a girl under 16 following grooming.
His defense stated that Morton was sexually inexperienced and had lost his job due to the conviction.
The judge, Recorder Alistair Macdonald QC, condemned Morton’s behavior, highlighting that he spoke about having penetrative sex with the girl in conversations.
He was sentenced to a one-year prison term suspended for two years, ordered to sign the sex offenders register, comply with a sexual offences prevention order, and participate in a treatment program.
