October 2002 10 years for sex attacker A RAPIST who repeatedly abused two girls – the youngest aged eight – has been jailed for 10 years. Ex-miner Cyril Beach, 56, of Pentre, Rhondda, initially denied the girls’ claims that they had been assaulted in his garden shed but before the matter could go to court he fled with his girlfriend to Cheltenham and changed his appearance, Merthyr Crown Court was told. The Judge John Curran commended South Wales Police for bringing the case to court and ordered the defendant to be registered as a sex offender for life. He said: “You are a manipulative individual with a psychotic personality who should not have unsupervised access to children.” Beach admitted six charges of raping two girls – one who was aged between six and eight, and the other 13 at the time – and was sentenced to 10 years imprisonment on each count to run concurrently. An admission of indecent assault against the older girl resulted in Beach receiving an 18-month concurrent sentence and a further ninemonth concurrent sentence for deliberately trying to evade justice, which he admitted. Huw Evans, prosecuting, said the older victim, now 34, claimed Beach raped her twice when she was aged between 13 and 15 under the threat of violence and stifled her cries, telling her the acts were natural and that he loved her. Mr Evans added he once forced her to perform a sex act, which made her physically sick. Peter Heyward, defending, said his client’s guilty pleas meant the women did not need to appear in court, pointing out Beach had previously suffered spinal injuries in a pit accident.
