CRAIG MORGAN POLE DOG THIEF FROM POOLE STRIKES AGAIN IN DEVASTATING CRIME

In a troubling incident that has left a family devastated, Craig Morgan, a man originally from Broxtowe in Nottingham with connections to Sheffield, was involved in the theft of a beloved family pet in Poole. The crime took place on 23 April 2021, when Andrew Smith was waiting outside Tesco Express on Quay Road with his German Shepherd puppy, Bear. As Smith stood there, Morgan approached him, engaging in seemingly friendly behavior by stroking the dog. However, the situation quickly turned sinister when Morgan unclipped Bear from his leash and boldly declared to Smith, "I have your dog," before making a swift escape on a Beryl bike.

Bear, who was stolen in broad daylight, was missing for two weeks before authorities managed to trace him back to an address in Poole. The reunion was a relief for Smith and his family, who had been heartbroken over the loss of their cherished pet. The emotional impact of the theft was evident in a victim impact statement submitted to the court, where Mr. Smith expressed his feelings: “We were so thrilled and happy when we first got Bear, since this awful crime it has taken that away. Bear is a member of the family, no person should have the right to take a family member away.”

During the court proceedings, Recorder Nicholas Haggan QC described Morgan’s actions as “a very mean offence,” emphasizing the distress caused to the victims. The judge acknowledged the emotional toll inflicted on Smith and his family, noting that they now feel uncomfortable when out walking their dog, and that their enjoyment of such simple pleasures has been significantly diminished. Despite the severity of the crime, Morgan was spared immediate imprisonment because he did not attempt to sell the dog, which the court considered a mitigating factor.

Craig Morgan was sentenced to a 10-month prison sentence, suspended for two years, meaning he will not serve time unless he commits further offenses within that period. Additionally, he was ordered to complete 200 hours of unpaid work and 20 days of rehabilitation requirements. The court’s decision reflects a recognition of the seriousness of the theft, but also a measure of leniency given the circumstances.

It is noteworthy that Morgan has a criminal history that includes a 2003 conviction at the age of 17 for attacking a family’s home and setting their cars on fire. He was sentenced to three and a half years in prison for those offenses and was subject to an Anti-Social Behaviour Order (ASBO) banning him from entering the estate where the attacks occurred, as well as restrictions on harassing anyone across Nottingham. Morgan’s past criminal record underscores a pattern of troubling behavior, which has now extended to the theft of a family pet in Poole, causing distress and upheaval for the victims involved.
