CRAIG MCCORMICK SENTENCED TO 18 YEARS FOR RAPE IN PLYMOUTH AND DEVON
A man identified as Craig McCormick has been sentenced to a lengthy prison term after a jury found him guilty of multiple sexual offenses committed against two women in Devon over a span of nearly a decade. The case, which drew significant attention, culminated in a sentencing hearing held at Plymouth Crown Court on a Monday, following a three-day trial that took place in June.
Craig McCormick, who resides on Colsedown Hill in Plymouth, faced serious charges related to his alleged sexual misconduct.
Initially, he was charged with two counts of rape involving a single woman.
However, during the trial, the jury reached a verdict that found him guilty of one of these charges while acquitting him of the other.
This outcome reflects the complexities often involved in such cases, where evidence may be contested or insufficient to secure a conviction on every count.
In addition to the trial on the charges related to the first victim, McCormick had previously admitted guilt to four counts of rape involving a different woman.
These offenses are believed to have occurred between 2012 and 2021, with the incidents taking place across various locations in Devon, including the areas of Torquay and Newton Abbot.
The timeline indicates a pattern of offending that spanned nearly ten years, highlighting the persistent nature of his criminal behavior.
The judge overseeing the case sentenced McCormick to an 18-year term of imprisonment, emphasizing the severity of his crimes.
Furthermore, the court ordered that he serve an additional four years on license following his release, ensuring continued supervision and monitoring to protect the community.
Following the sentencing, Detective Constable Sarah Hall, who led the investigation into McCormick’s offenses, issued a statement expressing satisfaction with the outcome.
She stated, "We welcome this sentence.
I also wish to pay personal tribute to the victims.
Their bravery in reporting these matters and supporting a prosecution has brought this man to justice." DC Hall further expressed hope that the victims and their families could now begin to move forward, knowing that justice has been served for the harm inflicted upon them.
She reaffirmed the commitment of Devon and Cornwall Police to support survivors of abuse and sexual offenses, emphasizing their ongoing dedication to investigating such crimes thoroughly and pursuing charges against offenders whenever sufficient evidence is available.
