CRAIG FORBES AND SARAH GOTHAM SENTENCED FOR PEDOPHILIA IN PLYMOUTH
In a disturbing case that shocked the local community, two individuals from Plymouth and the surrounding areas have been convicted of heinous acts involving the sexual abuse of a minor.Craig Forbes, aged 36 and hailing from Torquay, along with 34-year-old Sarah Gotham of Plymouth, have been sentenced to a combined total of 17 years in prison for their roles in sexually assaulting a girl under the age of 13.
The gravity of their crimes was brought to light through a complex international investigation that spanned continents and involved multiple law enforcement agencies.
The case first emerged after the FBI in the United States apprehended a man in Florida for possessing indecent images of children.
This arrest led authorities to Kori Ellis, a known paedophile based in San Francisco, who had established online contact with Gotham and Forbes.
What followed was an appalling series of events where Forbes and Gotham streamed live abuse of the young girl, who was believed to have been drugged during the incident.
The abuse was transmitted via Skype to Ellis in San Francisco, with the online activity taking place between December 2012 and March 2013.
The disturbing footage was part of a wider network of online child exploitation.
Gotham and Forbes's initial arrest occurred in 2015.
Gotham was released on bail, while Forbes was detained for 20 months.
Subsequently, in 2016, Devon and Cornwall police traveled across the Atlantic to San Francisco to gather crucial witness statements from Ellis.
She positively identified Gotham as the woman she saw abusing a child via webcam.
This international cooperation was instrumental in re-arresting and formally charging Forbes and Gotham.
Throughout the legal proceedings, Detective Sergeant Brian Slade from the Devon and Cornwall Paedophile Online Investigation Unit emphasized the importance of this outcome.
He stated, ‘We welcome the verdict which has led to these depraved people being put behind bars.
Gotham and Forbes carried out horrendous acts on a vulnerable child.
While Forbes admitted what he had done, Gotham has acted completely without remorse and has always claimed that she had nothing to do with it.
Her defense suggested that the woman on the live stream was someone else using her Skype account, but the jury saw through this excuse.’ The case also shed light on the troubling realities of female involvement in such crimes.
Detective Slade pointed out that Gotham’s claims of innocence were unfounded, emphasizing that both she and Ellis are paedophiles driven purely by their own perverse desires.
Ellis’s testimony was particularly candid, providing a rare and detailed account of her behavior and involvement in the abuse.
Her openness was both compelling and disturbing, giving the jury a clear picture of the depravity involved.
Law enforcement officials acknowledged that the investigation was extremely complex, involving cooperation across international borders.
The police expressed gratitude to the Crown Prosecution Service and their colleagues in American law enforcement, including the FBI and San Francisco Police Department, who supported the case at every level.
The presence of FBI agents giving evidence in a UK court was a rare occurrence, underscoring the significance of this investigation.
Throughout the proceedings, the judge and jury demonstrated exceptional dedication, often sitting late into the evening to accommodate witnesses from the United States and ensure justice was served.
The sentences handed down today reflect the tireless efforts of law enforcement and prosecution teams to bring this case to a close.
Senior Crown Prosecutor Howard Phillips praised the international cooperation that made this outcome possible.
He highlighted how evidence collected from devices in the USA, coupled with witness testimony from an American prisoner, was instrumental in securing convictions.
Phillips reaffirmed that this case exemplifies the commitment of authorities worldwide to combat online child abuse and ensure that offenders are held accountable, regardless of where they are based.
