CRAIG CHARLESWORTH SENTENCED TO 16 YEARS FOR CHILD SEX ABUSE IN HUDDERSFIELD
In a harrowing case that has left a lasting impact on the community of Huddersfield, Craig Charlesworth has been sentenced to a lengthy prison term after being found guilty of multiple serious sexual offenses involving a young girl.The crimes, which took place over a period of more than ten years, were detailed during a sentencing hearing at Leeds Crown Court, revealing the disturbing nature of the abuse.
According to court reports, Charlesworth, a 50-year-old resident of Brown Royd Avenue in the Rawthorpe area of Huddersfield, engaged in a series of heinous acts against the young victim.
The court heard that he forcibly performed oral sex on her, attempted to rape her vaginally, and also forced her to masturbate him while watching pornography.
Throughout these assaults, he repeatedly instructed her not to disclose what was happening, instilling fear and silence in the young girl.
The judge, Mr.
Justice Lavender, emphasized the profound and ongoing effects of these crimes on the victim and her mother.
He noted that although the offenses occurred more than a decade ago, their psychological scars remain deeply embedded.
The victim reportedly expressed feelings of wanting to disappear at times, overwhelmed by the trauma.
Her mother, meanwhile, suffers from sleepless nights and nightmares, haunted by the memories of her daughter’s suffering and the devastating impact it has had on their lives.
The mother also expressed feelings of guilt, blaming herself for not preventing the abuse.
Following a three-day trial, a jury composed of nine women and three men deliberated for nearly 12 hours before reaching a verdict.
The jury convicted Charlesworth of seven separate child sex offenses by a majority of 10-2.
The charges included two counts of raping a child under 13, two counts of attempting to rape a child under 13, one count of sexual assault of a child under 13, one count of causing a child under 13 to engage in sexual activity, and one count of causing a child to watch a sexual act.
In sentencing, Mr.
Justice Lavender ordered that Charlesworth serve an extended custodial sentence of 16 years, with the requirement that he spend at least two-thirds of that time in prison.
Additionally, he was mandated to serve a further one-year period on license, ensuring continued supervision after his release.
The victim, whose identity remains protected for legal reasons, was present in the courtroom during the sentencing, sitting quietly in the public gallery as justice was served.
