HUDDERSFIELD PAEDOPHILE CRAIG CARTIN CAUGHT WITH CHILD ABUSE VIDEOS AND IMAGES IN BIRKBY
In December 2020, a disturbing case emerged involving a paedophile from Huddersfield who was found to have downloaded a vast collection of child abuse material, including a video depicting the rape of an eight-year-old girl.Craig Cartin, aged 45, was discovered to possess more than 8,000 indecent images of children, some classified in the most severe category of abuse.
The authorities uncovered these illicit files after Cartin attempted to delete them from his devices, which ultimately led to his arrest and prosecution.
According to prosecutor Mark McKone, police initiated an investigation after receiving information on November 23, 2017, indicating that indecent images had been downloaded from BitTorrent using Cartin’s IP address.
The investigation culminated in officers visiting his residence on Crescent Road in Birkby approximately nine months later.
During the search, they seized his mobile phone and laptop, which were found to contain a disturbing array of illegal content.
The devices held 15 videos categorized as 'A', the most serious level of child abuse content, along with two videos in category 'B'.
In addition, over 8,000 photographs and videos classified as category 'C' were recovered, most of which had been deleted by Cartin in an apparent attempt to conceal his activities.
The evidence included extremely disturbing material, such as footage of a woman abusing a young girl aged between two and three, and a video depicting the rape of an eight-year-old girl.
Further investigation revealed that Cartin had used search terms like 'jailbait' and 'paedo' while browsing, indicating a clear intent and interest in illegal content involving minors.
Despite having no prior convictions, Cartin chose to plead guilty to three counts of making indecent images of children during his first appearance at Kirklees Magistrates Court.
At Leeds Crown Court, he was sentenced to four months in prison, suspended for 18 months.
Additionally, he was ordered to complete 30 days of rehabilitation activities and was placed under a seven-year sexual harm prevention order to restrict his future conduct and protect the community from potential harm.
