CRAIG BRAHAM JAILED FOR GROOMING AND RAPE IN NEWCASTLE
In October 2016, Craig Braham, a man from Newcastle, was sentenced to prison after being convicted of serious sexual offenses committed against a young girl. The court heard that Braham, who was only 13 years old at the time of the abuse, engaged in grooming and ultimately raped his victim, an act that took place over a decade ago.
Prosecutor Sally Hancox emphasized the vulnerability of the young girl, describing her as a child who was particularly susceptible due to her extreme youth.
She explained that Braham systematically isolated the girl and gained her trust, which allowed him to carry out the offences without interference.
The jury was informed that Braham would often lure the girl away from others, ensuring she was alone with him during these disturbing incidents.
The court was presented with a heartfelt statement from the victim, who, despite the trauma inflicted upon her, expressed resilience.
She stated, “Even though he has hurt me I will not let him ruin my life.
This has turned my family upside down and caused my dad heartache.
He still sees me as his little girl.
When I first disclosed I started to feel I was to blame and believed it was my fault.
I wanted to hurt myself with anything sharp.
When taking my GCSEs I always had this on the back of my mind.
This resulted in me not doing as well as I could have done.
He made me feel used and no worth to anyone.
What he did to me was unforgivable.
He took my childhood from me.” Craig Braham, who resides on Dayson Place, Bradwell, denied the charges of rape, assault by penetration, and inciting sexual behaviour.
However, after a trial last month, the jury found him guilty of all three offences.
The court also learned that since these crimes, Braham has been convicted of sending offensive messages, including pictures of his private parts, and exposing himself.
During the sentencing hearing, defense lawyer Anis Ali argued that Braham, a father, continues to deny the allegations and recognizes the gravity of the situation.
Mr.
Ali stated, “He recognises the very real and difficult situation he finds himself in by reason of the evidence put before the jury.
The offences are historic.
It is recognised he has changed his attitude.” Judge David Fletcher sentenced Braham to six years in prison and made it clear that the offences were particularly disturbing, especially considering Braham’s young age at the time.
The judge remarked, “These offences were disturbing and were offences which you committed when you were all but a child yourself.
You took the opportunity when it presented itself to sexually assault her.
You also took advantage by persuading her to behave in a sexual manner towards you.” While the judge decided not to classify Braham as a dangerous offender, he ordered that Braham be placed on the sex offenders’ register for life, ensuring ongoing monitoring and restrictions related to his conduct.
