DERBY PAEDOPHILE CRAIG BARTON AND HIS HORRIFIC CHILD ABUSE IMAGES AT HOLIDAY INN
In August 2021, a disturbing case emerged involving Craig Barton, a man with a long history of sexual offenses, who was found to possess an extensive collection of child abuse images while staying at a Holiday Inn in Derby. The case revealed the depths of his depravity and the ongoing threat he posed to the community.
Derby Crown Court heard how police, after receiving credible information, managed to access Barton’s mobile device, uncovering thousands of vile images and videos depicting the sexual abuse of children.
Despite Barton’s refusal to provide the device’s PIN, knowing exactly what the authorities would discover, investigators eventually gained access and found a horrifying cache of illegal material.
The police discovered a total of 2,801 Category A images and films, which are classified as the most serious, along with 1,926 Category B and 4,064 Category C images.
Among these were images depicting the rape of infants under the age of one, a revelation that Judge Shaun Smith QC described as "depraved beyond belief".
Earlier in the year, Barton, 38, who was residing at the Holiday Inn at Pride Park, had already been sentenced to three years in prison after breaching a sexual harm prevention order.
However, with the new evidence of the additional images, the court decided to impose an extra year of imprisonment, emphasizing the severity of his offenses.
Prosecutor Steffan Fox detailed how police responded to the case on September 25 of the previous year, after receiving information that an email address linked to Barton was involved in downloading child abuse material.
When officers arrived at the Holiday Inn, Barton refused to cooperate, explicitly stating he would rather face a breach of his order than disclose his PIN.
His device was capable of internet access, and the refusal to unlock it hindered the investigation.
The police also found extreme pornography involving adults engaged in sexual acts with animals, further illustrating the disturbing nature of his offenses.
Barton pleaded guilty to charges of making indecent images of children and possessing extreme pornography.
During a hearing conducted remotely from HMP Oakwood near Wolverhampton, where he was incarcerated, he offered a remorseful statement, claiming that since his last sentencing, he had started a new relationship and had been honest with his partner about his past offenses.
He also mentioned that she had supported him in seeking help through the Lucy Faithfull Foundation, a charity dedicated to rehabilitating child sex offenders.
Despite his expressed remorse and efforts at rehabilitation, the court made it clear that Barton’s sexual harm prevention order would remain in effect for the rest of his life, ensuring ongoing supervision and restrictions.
The case underscores the persistent danger posed by individuals like Barton, whose actions continue to have devastating impacts on victims and their families.
