LERWICK MAN RECEIVES CUSTODIAL ORDERS AFTER VIOLENT ASSAULT ON PARTNER

A Lerwick man named Cory Williamson, aged 22, was involved in a violent assault against his partner following a dispute over household chores. The incident occurred after a night of drinking and drug use, which impaired his judgment. According to court reports, Williamson injured his partner by hitting her over the head with a mug after she asked him to assist with housework. The victim, the mother of his child, required hospital treatment for cuts sustained during the attack. Following the initial assault, Williamson assaulted her again when she returned home and found him sleeping. The court also heard that Williamson attacked two police officers during his arrest and breached bail conditions twice by attempting to contact the complainant.

The court documented how the first assault happened on January 26, 2023, after a heated argument at their home in Lerwick. The victim had asked Williamson to help with housework, which he reacted negatively to. During the argument, he began pushing her around, and after she called a friend for help, Williamson shoved his face close to hers before smashing a mug over her head, causing bleeding and cuts. The victim was taken to hospital following the incident.

Later that day, Williamson found her at a friend’s house and succumbed to anger, pushing her again and slapping her in the face. The situation escalated when Williamson attempted to push her down the stairs, resulting in both falling and her hitting her head on a radiator. After the fall, Williamson punched her and then fled the scene. Police apprehended him shortly afterward, and he was taken into custody.

During his police interview, Williamson remained silent, but he became aggressive towards officers, punching one repeatedly, attempting to seize a radio, and kicking a female officer. His defense argued that alcohol and drug consumption on the night of the offending contributed to his behavior, but acknowledged it did not excuse his actions. His attorney highlighted that Williamson was aware of the seriousness of his situation and previous incarceration history, and he expressed remorse and regret.

The court sentenced Williamson to a two-year supervision order, along with 240 hours of unpaid work, emphasizing the importance of good behavior and compliance with community orders. The sheriff also deferred sentencing for three months to assess his conduct. Previous bail restrictions not to contact the victim were lifted, but the sheriff warned Williamson that any reoffending could lead to imprisonment.
