A man has been sentenced to prison after sexually assaulting a woman along a canal towpath.

On the evening of Friday, November 1 of the previous year, Constantin Radu seized a woman from behind as she was walking beneath a bridge close to Wilford Street in Nottingham.

He proceeded to assault her over her clothing before calmly departing the scene.

Thanks to the victim’s description, police officers nearby were able to locate and arrest Radu.

While in custody, Radu exposed himself to a female officer who was visiting his cell.

The 32-year-old, who had no fixed address, was remanded in custody and subsequently pleaded guilty to charges of sexual assault and exposure.

He also admitted to two additional counts of exposure in the city centre—one on the same day of the attack when he exposed himself on a bench, and another on October 30 when two young women were subjected to similar exposure.

At Nottingham Crown Court on Friday, 9 May, Radu was sentenced to 33 months in prison.

Furthermore, he was placed under a Sexual Harm Prevention Order, which will impose restrictions upon his activities once he is released.

This order specifically bans him from entering land adjacent to Nottingham Canal between Beeston Lock and the River Trent.

Violating this order could result in an immediate return to incarceration.
