COLLEEN SWEENEY OF CLYDEBANK FACES JUSTICE FOR CRUELTY TO DOG STAR

In a case that has shocked the local community of Clydebank, Colleen Sweeney, born on 14 April 1991 and residing on Middleward Street, Faifley, was found guilty of neglecting her beloved pet, a dog believed to be a Lhasa Apso named Star. The heartbreaking case revealed that Sweeney had left her loyal companion to suffer for an entire year, neglecting her basic veterinary and care needs amid personal financial struggles.

Between June 22, 2021, and June 22, 2022, Sweeney failed to seek medical treatment for Star’s worsening health issues, which included a chronic eye condition that developed into severe eye and skin infections. Despite her attempts to treat the dog’s ailments, her efforts were insufficient, and the dog's condition deteriorated significantly. The neglect was so severe that Star’s coat became heavily matted, and she was emaciated, suffering pain, discomfort, and distress as a result of her untreated ailments.

Star’s condition worsened to the point where her life was in danger, leading to her being euthanized on welfare grounds. The decision to put her to sleep was made after her suffering became unbearable, and her condition was deemed beyond recovery. The image of Star in healthier times was shown during the proceedings, highlighting the tragic decline in her health.

Sweeney’s legal representative expressed her remorse, stating that she was “very much ashamed of herself for not taking proper care of the dog and causing it pain and suffering.” The solicitor explained that Sweeney had cared for Star for seven years and had been a responsible owner until her financial difficulties arose. She had recently lost her job and experienced complications with her benefits, which left her struggling financially and unable to afford the necessary veterinary care.

According to her solicitor, Sweeney had attempted to treat the eye infection herself, first by consulting a veterinarian and later by purchasing eye drops online. However, she acknowledged that her efforts were inadequate and that she should have done more to ensure her pet’s well-being. She also tried to groom Star herself, despite being a first-time dog owner, and expressed her regret over the outcome.

During the court hearing, Sheriff William Gallacher addressed the case, noting that it was “an unusual case” and acknowledging the social work report that was presented. The sheriff emphasized that Sweeney’s neglect appeared to be unintentional and driven by her circumstances, rather than malice. He advised that if someone cannot afford to care for a dog properly, they should not keep one at all.

As a result of her actions, Sweeney was fined £250 and received a two-year ban from keeping dogs, which will expire in February 2025. The court’s decision aimed to serve as a reminder of the importance of responsible pet ownership and the consequences of neglecting animals in one’s care.
