January 2013 Shame but no jail for Huddersfield advice worker guilty of child-abuse images An advice worker is to resign from his job after his conviction for downloading indecent images of children while living in Huddersfield. But Colin Prout has been spared jail, after a judge said justice would better be served by a community order. Leeds Crown Court heard yesterday that in 2011 police received intelligence about a child abuse website. Jeremy Lindsay, prosecuting, said the site was closed down but contact details for those looking at the site were retained. That led to officers subsequently getting a search warrant for the then home of Prout in Huddersfield. He was arrested and his computer equipment was examined which revealed a total of 116 indecent images and two movies. When interviewed Prout said he had started by looking at adult pornography but had become bored with it, and then began looking at images of children and bestiality which he did on a couple of occasions. He said he would do that when his family were asleep upstairs. He put them in a file and knew they were there to go back and look at again if he wanted. Mr Lindsay said Prout indicated he was sorry for viewing the images and said he realised it contributed towards the abuse of children. Mark Brookes, representing Prout, since he had already lost a great deal through his offending. His marriage had ended and he was now living with his parents in Ossett. Prout, 55, admitted six offences of making indecent images and was given a 36-month community order with supervision and 60 days activity. He was also ordered to pay £340 costs. Judger Rodney Jameson QC told him at the moment it was not possible for him to do the sex offender treatment programme under the length of prison sentence allowed to be suspended and since that would be better for all in the wrong run he would do that under a community order. December 2013 Guilty over 100 child sex images A man has admitted making more than 100 indecent images of children. Colin Prout, 55, appeared at Kirklees Magistrates’ Court yesterday. He pleaded guilty to six charges of making an indecent photograph. The offences happened in Huddersfield on or before October 19 last year. Prosecutor Robert Campbell said that police found the images on two computers. These images are categorised into five levels of seriousness, level five being the most serious Prout, of Broadgate in Ossett, had 103 level one images. There were also two photographs at level two, three at level three and eight at level four. Level four images typically show penetrative sexual activity involving a child or both children and adults. Police also uncovered two level one movies on Prout’s computer. Judge Malon said that because of the level four images he needs to be sentenced by a crown court judge. This will take place at Leeds Crown Court on January 2. Prout was granted unconditional bail but must now sign the Sex Offenders’ Register as he stands convicted of the offences.
