COLIN DAY FROM GRAYS SENTENCED FOR DOWNLOAD OF OVER 5,000 CHILD ABUSE IMAGES IN BASILDON
In a disturbing case that has shocked the community of Grays, a man named Colin Victor Day has been sentenced to prison for his involvement in the possession and distribution of a vast collection of child abuse images. The incident came to light after police investigations uncovered that Day, aged 46 and residing at Dene Croft, had downloaded more than 5,000 indecent images depicting children engaged in sexual activities. On June 9, 2011, authorities executed a search warrant at Day’s former residence on Rushton Close. At the time, Day was present at the property with his wife, Janice. He was found sitting in the living room with a laptop resting on his knee. The police seized the device for examination, which subsequently revealed a horrifying collection of illegal material. The analysis of the laptop uncovered a staggering total of 5,160 indecent images of children, most of which were classified as level four, indicating a severe level of abuse. Many of these images depicted penetrative sexual acts involving young children, a fact that underscores the gravity of the offense.
It was established during court proceedings that Day had been downloading these images over an extended period, often revisiting many of them multiple times. The court was informed that he also possessed several extreme pornography images, including obscene cartoons, further highlighting the disturbing nature of his activities.
Judge Graham, presiding over the case at Basildon Crown Court, addressed the court and expressed concern over Day’s attitude during the proceedings. The judge noted that Day had been notably reticent and uncooperative when questioned about his actions, which was viewed as problematic. The defense, represented by Mr. Bagnall, argued that Day’s criminal behavior was part of a downward spiral caused by personal hardships. It was revealed that he had lost his job, faced repossession of his house, experienced a breakup with his second wife, turned to alcohol, and was disowned by his children.
After viewing a selection of the images, Judge Graham emphasized the seriousness of the offense, stating, “The majority of them were sexual images comprising penetrative sexual activity involving children. These are real images of real people who are being abused so these images can be taken.”
As part of his sentence, Day was handed a Sexual Offences Prevention Order, which grants authorities the authority to monitor his internet activity and restrict his contact with children. The order also stipulates that he must be supervised around children unless their parents explicitly give permission for him to be alone with them.
Ultimately, Day was sentenced to eight months in prison, with the court ordering that he serve four months of that sentence. This case serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing efforts by law enforcement to combat the distribution and possession of child abuse images, and the severe consequences faced by those found guilty of such heinous crimes.
