June 2012 Paedophile jailed for downloading 5,000 images A MAN from Grays has been jailed for downloading thousands of images of child abuse. Colin Victor Day, 46, of Dene Croft, was jailed for eight months after a judge heard that he had downloaded more than 5,000 indecent images of children. He was also found to be in possession of several indecent images of extreme pornography, including obscene cartoons. He pleaded guilty to six counts of making and possessing illegal images and was sentenced at Basildon Crown Court on Monday. The court heard that police executed a search warrant on Day’s former home in Rushton Close on June 9, 2011. Day was at the property with his wife Janice and was sitting in the living room with a laptop on his knee. Police took the laptop and had it examined. The examination turned up 5,160 indecent images of children, most of which were considered to be level four – the second worst category – and depicted penetrative sex with young children. The court heard that Day had downloaded the images over a long period of time, accessing many of them multiple times. Judge Graham, presiding over the hearing, said the defendant’s ‘attitude’ was a problem, adding that Day had been ‘very reticent’ about admitting that he had done anything wrong. Defence barrister Mr Bagnall said Day had been in a ‘downward’ spiral when he committed the offences. He said Day had lost his job, had his house repossessed, split up with his second wife, turned to alcohol and been disowned by his children. After viewing a selection of the images, Judge Graham told Day: “The majority of them were sexual images comprising penetrative sexual activity involving children. “These are real images of real people who are being abused so these images can be taken.” He handed Day a Sexual Offences Prevention Order which gave police the ability to monitor his internet usage and demanded that he be supervised around children unless their parents give express consent for him to be alone with them. He sent Day to jail for eight months, of which he will serve four.
