SOUTH ESSEX CHURCH VOLUNTEER WHO RAPED GIRLS CLAIMED THE DEVIL MADE HIM DO IT
A south Essex church volunteer who raped and sexually abused two young girls claimed the devil made him do it.
Paedophile Garth Ellis, 58, of Lennox Close in Chafford Hundred, Grays, began abusing one victim when she was just seven years old.
A former driving instructor, he forced two of the child victims to perform sex acts on him in his car.
When they confronted him years later, he told them: “The devil came over me.” After they reported him to police, officers found a secretly filmed video of a third young victim naked on one of his devices.
Ellis pleaded guilty to offences of rape, attempted rape, sexual assault and voyeurism against girls under 13.
He also admitted making an indecent image and two charges of possessing extreme pornography.
Judge Samantha Leigh sentenced Ellis to 13 years in prison, plus four years on extended licence, and imposed a 20-year Sexual Harm Prevention Order and restraining orders banning him from any contact with his victims for the same period.
