COLIN BURNETT SENTENCED IN NEWCASTLE FOR SEXUAL OFFENSES AND SUICIDE ATTEMPT

In June 2014, Colin Burnett, a 69-year-old man from Jarrow, was sentenced to three years in prison after admitting to sexual assault charges. The case came to light when his young female victim courageously disclosed the abuse he had inflicted upon her. Following this revelation, Burnett attempted to take his own life by slashing his wrists. A note found in his car expressed his remorse and shame for his actions. At Newcastle Crown Court, Judge James Goss, QC, addressed Burnett directly, stating, “Offending of this kind does have very significant effects, sometimes lifelong effects upon people who are abused in this way. These are serious offences for which there must be a sentence of imprisonment.” Burnett, who resides at Nolan Hall, Jarrow, had initially admitted to the sexual assault charges when confronted. Neil Pallister, the prosecutor, explained that Burnett’s suicide attempt involved cutting his wrists, and the note recovered indicated his regret. Graeme Cook, defending, highlighted Burnett’s remorse and vulnerability following his suicide attempt, noting that he had no prior criminal history. As part of his sentence, Burnett is required to sign the sex offenders’ register and will be subject to a sexual offences prevention order for life.
