BRISTOL SEXUAL PREDATOR COLIN BARNES SENTENCED AFTER CAUGHT BY PAEDOPHILE HUNTERS IN CARDIFF
In a significant case that highlights the ongoing efforts to combat online child exploitation, Colin Thomas Barnes, a resident of Bristol, was brought before Cardiff Crown Court to face charges related to his disturbing online activities involving a minor.Barnes was accused of engaging in a series of serious sexual offences, including attempting to meet a child under the age of 13, inciting a minor into sexual activity on six separate occasions, and engaging in sexual communication with a child under 13.
The court proceedings revealed that Barnes had actively contacted an online profile he believed belonged to a 12-year-old girl, with the clear intent of initiating a sexual encounter.
The court was informed that Barnes had sent sexually explicit messages to the supposed minor, demonstrating his intent to engage her in sexual activity.
His plans culminated in an arranged meeting on the 25th of February, 2019, at the Ship Inn car park located in Llantwit Fardre.
However, his intentions were thwarted when members of a paedophile hunting team known as 'KKS Wales' intercepted him before the meeting could take place.
The vigilante group questioned Barnes about his online activities and contacted the police.
Law enforcement officers responded swiftly, arriving at the scene and arresting Barnes on suspicion of multiple sexual offences involving a minor.
The evidence collected and the circumstances of the arrest led to his subsequent court appearance.
During the sentencing, the court found Barnes guilty of the charges.
He was sentenced to two years imprisonment for each of the six counts of inciting a child under 13 into sexual activity, and an additional six months for sexual communication with a minor under 13.
All sentences were ordered to run concurrently, resulting in a total prison term of two years.
Furthermore, the judge imposed a 10-year sexual harm prevention order on Barnes and mandated that he register as a sex offender for the same duration.
This case underscores the importance of community vigilance and the ongoing efforts by law enforcement and volunteer groups to protect children from online predators.
The actions of the paedophile hunting team 'KKS Wales' played a crucial role in preventing what could have been a tragic incident, and the court's sentence reflects the severity with which such offences are treated.
