MAN JAILED FOR SUBJECTING EX-PARTNER TO YEARS OF CONTROLLING BEHAVIOUR
A man from Bristol has received a prison sentence after subjecting his former partner to prolonged manipulative and controlling conduct.
Cody Smith-Alwood, aged 37 and residing in St George, was given a 38-month prison term at Bristol Crown Court on Monday, 23 June.
He admitted to charges including controlling and coercive behaviour, assault by beating, a section four public order offence, and violating a restraining order intended to protect another woman.
The court was told that his former partner endured several years of manipulative and controlling actions, leading to a new seven-year restraining order being issued to safeguard her.
From 2020 to 2024, Smith-Alwood engaged repeatedly in controlling and coercive acts, such as ignoring the end of his relationship by staying at her home for extended periods, managing her phone usage, making constant calls, and threatening to disclose her confidential information.
On 4 November 2024, after a dispute at Avonview Cemetery, he threatened to stab her brother and his friend.
Later, he lifted her onto his shoulder, causing her to fall and graze her knee.
He was arrested on 20 November, charged, and remanded into custody.
While in custody, he continued to contact her persistently during ongoing legal proceedings related to his controlling behaviour.
His sentencing included six months for breaching a restraining order against another woman, 32 months for the controlling and coercive conduct involving his ex-partner, and an additional month each for assault by beating and a public order offence, to be served concurrently.
