ASHFORD MAN CODY HINKLEY SENTENCED TO SIX YEARS FOR CHILD SEX ABUSE IN KENT

In a case that has shocked the community of Ashford, Cody Hinkley, a 21-year-old resident of Sussex Avenue, was sentenced to six years in prison after being found guilty of sexually abusing two young children. The offences, which occurred several years prior to his arrest, involved one victim whom he sexually assaulted and another whom he attempted to rape, as detailed during the proceedings at Canterbury Crown Court.

Hinkley's actions came to light after police investigations, which revealed that he had previously received a police caution in 2011 for performing a sex act in a public skate park. Despite this prior warning, the court heard that the more serious offences involving children had taken place some years earlier. When confronted with the allegations, Hinkley did not deny his involvement. Instead, he admitted to five sex offences, a fact that the judge acknowledged as a sign of his honesty.

During the hearing, Hinkley's barrister, Richard Barton, argued that his client did not fit the typical profile of a sex offender, attempting to mitigate the severity of the sentence. However, Judge Adele Williams emphasized the gravity of the crimes and the lasting impact on the victims. She noted that Hinkley's immediate admission of guilt was commendable but stressed that the harm inflicted on the children would have long-term consequences.

In a poignant moment during the court proceedings, Hinkley was seen putting his head in his hands and acknowledging the truth of the allegations by telling police, “Everything they (his victims) say is true. I did do that.” Despite this, the judge made it clear that the effects of his actions would be enduring, stating, “However, I have no doubt whatsoever that your conduct has had a profound effect on your victims and there will be long-term effects.”

As part of his sentence, Hinkley will be registered on the sex offenders’ register for life and will be subject to an indefinite sex offenders’ prevention order. These measures are designed to monitor and restrict his activities to prevent further harm.

Following the sentencing, a spokesperson from Kent Police issued a statement underscoring the seriousness with which such cases are treated. “The circumstances of any offence of this nature are always harrowing,” the spokesperson said. “This case demonstrates that regardless of how long ago or recent any allegations of sexual abuse are, they will always be taken seriously by the police, and the concerns of victims will be thoroughly investigated.”
